A batman was originally a soldier in the British army assigned to an officer as a personal servant, specifically to look after his bedding. This meant also looking after the horse that carried the bedding around, along with the officer’s other personal effects.
The batman and the officer would often develop a close personal relationship, and it was common for the batman to end up working for the officer as a butler after they left the army. In Lord of the Rings, Sam Gamgee’s relationship with Frodo Baggins was based on JRR Tolkien’s observations of officers and batmen.
The DC Comics character of Batman is therefore a pun.

Fun fact: John Batman was one of the leaders of the first European party to land in what is now Melbourne (Australia ). When the settlement had grown to be a town and needed a name, one of the proposed names was Batmania.
