I always think Estonia should be northern and the two other balts eastern. Plus Crostia (maybe Slowakia also) Southeast.

While visiting the Prague, I learned that referring to the Czech Republic as Eastern Europe is likely to make people very angry.

  4. I understand the nature of these is to draw hard borders when the truth is much more gradient; but even still it seems odd to draw a hard line between Bosnia and Croatia, or Netherlands and Germany

  5. The Mittleeuropa borders are just those of the German and Austro-Hungarian Empires + Baltics.

  6. Oh not again. Kulturräumlichen Kriterien my ass, if they can enlighten us what Porto, Courmayeur and Otranto have in common they can be my guests.

As a Lithuanian, I do feel we have more in common with Poland than with Latvia, so I think we’re Central European. But Latvia and Estonia have been impacted more by Germans and Swedes, so they’d probably fit better under Northern Europe.

  8. „As a german“ – yes, that’s what they teach Germans

„Perfection“ – yes, perfect is Latin for finished, it’s a suitable word for someone that thinks these things don’t change, aren’t completed, don’t have other interpretations

Well, when the borders were defined back in the 19th century, the comittee was just using real political lines of their time. It’s still close enough, but obviously there are transitional areas.

Alsace-Lorraine confirmed as flashpoint for next war in Europe.

(I was going to say WWIII, but I think those days are gone)

  13. Northern Spain and Portugal should be western Europe. Asturias, Galicia, Oporto, Navarre, Basque country, Cantabria… Those places don’t feel like southern europe

Greater German Empire (nicknamed Central Europe, including the German lands and its Eastern European colonies).

  15. My brain knows that Iceland would literally be „Eis Land“, but my brain seeing „Island“ is not helping me.

“Permanent Committee on Geographical Names” – sounds like a friendly joke about German completism, does any other country have anything similar?

Switzerland is totally the freaking same as Estonia (which should be grouped with either Russia or Finland). Come on this is ridiculous

Including Alsace-Lorraine in Central Europe basically single handedly shows this map to be irredentist nonsense.

  22. 77 comments, no mention of Romania.

As a Romanian this is pretty accurate however. Huge divide between the two sides of the Carpathians

  23. The German government revealing the countries they want to invade in advance (Mitteleuropa).

It’s hilarious that the nation named „Estonia“ and referred to as „Estland“ in German is classed as Central Europe.
