The disaster of California high speed rail and trying to cater to every despot along a route needs to kept in mind throughout this project. Build the optimal railroad between Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto and ignore the rest.

Couldn’t Kingston add some public transit options to get there? It’s not incredibly far off from where Kingston is.

A regional train along the 401 is a great idea, but it’s a different project than Alto.

This would’ve been the smarter routing if they planned this from the beginning, but we’re in too deep to change the route now.

Better decision would be to increase frequency and speed on the Kingston-Ottawa section of Via’s route

    5. The 401 isn’t straight enough for a full HSR line. You’d also be adding tens of billions of dollars just dealing with the density and infrastructure in the region, all while nerfing the line as a whole.

We’d be much better off expanding GO to Kingston instead and then either paying off, or threatening CN/CP to allow us to improve the rail capacity in the Cooridor

    6. On one hand, it makes sense for the Alto to be more or less aligned with the 401 and therefore closer to the population centers. On the other, I though the Peterborough route was chosen because of the availability of an existing rail corridor. So switching to Kingston might change the economic viability of the project.

Presently I like the coordior proposed and the fact that there are minimal stops. CN already maintain trains along the more traditional route and we have the 401.

      The Toronto-Peterborough-Ottawa is fine.
Highway 7 is already in that corridor.

I think that is a fair ask, we should also add stops at Dorval, Coteau,  Alexandria, Casselman, and 2-3 local stops in Ottawa.

We should also make sure no trees are felled and the train should operate at low speeds within 1 km of any residence to minimize vibrations impacting those homes.

Let’s build Ottawa to Montreal and then see where we’re at. Let’s get it started and get demand going. Kingston need to get over itself. Get VIA to connect you to Peterborough.

“South Frontenac and the townships surrounding Kingston are home to families who have farmed for generations, small businesses that rely on tourism and recreation, and are a part of the health of our region. A new rail corridor cutting through untouched rural land and sensitive landscapes will permanently change that character and divide communities.”

The mayors say aligning the rail line along Highway 401 would “minimize (the) destruction and fragmentation of farmland, wetlands, and communities,” noting that South Frontenac is home to several nationally significant heritage features, such as the Frontenac Arch UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

“Running high-speed rail through rural areas will disrupt communities whose livelihoods depend on farming, tourism and stewardship of the environment,” the joint statement says.”

So basically they demand that there should be a high-speed train going through their region and are lobbying for it, but then complain about having one in every way… got it.

    11. You can’t really have a single route that hits Kingston and Ottawa. And as lovely as Kingston is, it’s not exactly a hotspot of travel.

Not only is Ottawa over a million people (plus gatineau)… but it also has the government. And yes sure Kingston has queens… but Ottawa has uottawa and Carleton.

It would be an ass backwards idea to include Kingston. Sure it punches about its weight but it’s still just a random university town. If Ottawa weren’t here, it would be a convenient midway stop… but alas a better option exists.

Here’s the thing: A high-speed train CANNOT stop everywhere and pass everywhere to cater to everyone’s individual needs/wants or else it becomes…a slow train, which we already have!

The PRIMARY goal of that high-speed train is to connect the TWO BIGGEST CITIES of the country (Toronto and Montreal). Anything else is secondary.

I hope they don’t do this. If they cave to everyone who wants a route change for every little town we will never get anything done. Just like the last ten plus years on this file.

Very pro northern route along the transmission line. It’s through harder rock but it’s away from people.

Kingston should be the anchor of conventional rail corridor service.

Kingston instead of Peterborough makes more sense from every single point of view aside from construction cost. Unfortunately for Kingston, Peterborough is where the existing track goes.

Not to rag on Peterborough, but Kingston (and its surrounding area) is the biggest and highest traffic city between Toronto and Ottawa by leaps and bounds.

    16. One thing Toronto does need is a second rail hub. European cities have several major rail stations and Union in Toronto is at capacity.
