  1. Buy cosmic crisp, it’s way better now. I also noticed a decline in quality for Pink Lady.

It’s been a difficult season for agriculture in Spain, maybe recent deliveries are reflecting that.

Magic Star at Edeka is a choice to switch to.

I would imagine we’re just hitting the end of fresh Pink Lady apples.

  4. No idea why, but I’ve noticed the same, strangely. I used to buy mine at Kaufland. I switched to Elstar apples a few weeks ago.

  5. Go for Wellant, my second favourite or my favorite Honey Crunch. Sadly i havent seen hones crunches for a year at least.

Noticed this as well. The quality of the loose ones is terrible, the packaged ones (the 6 pack) are slightly better but also noticibly smaller with pressure marks.

  7. If you get deep into the Apple game you realized that they are actually still „seasonal“ yet we have grown accustomed to having them all year round and thus they are produced „all season“ around the globe or stored.
So you may get a batch that has been „older“ or grown somewhere else and thus lost some of its freshness due to seasonal challenges, delivery chain delays, storage issues etc.

  8. It’s spring. Any apples you’re getting at the moment were either grown in artificial conditions, or have been transported very long distances, or have been stored for quite a long time. And as the climate is getting hotter and drier at the moment, bad harvests are likely to get increasingly common.

These are natural products, not manufactured goods, so consistency is never guaranteed.

  9. Apples are picked in the fall and then stored in giant fridges with ‚controlled atmosphere‘ (i.e. nitrogen replacing most oxygen). Late in the storage season, which is basically now till summer, you do start to get some that are less crispy, more mealy, etc. It will also depend how long they’ve been sitting on store shelves, etc.

I mean, apples don’t grow continuously the whole year in Germany. Some are also imported, which is basically fine for apples and doesn’t change the fruit too much (due to the mentioned storage technique). Well, carbon footprint aside.

As far as locally grown apples available in supermarkets, I am an (Orange) Cox boy myself. Wellant are also nice. Bioladen (with produce sections) usually have a good variety of different heirlooms, etc.

We have a lot of tasty Apples in Germany as well. No need to let them travel far. Just try some..
You get fresh Apples, even If it’s not the season.

They get stored under special climate and stay fresh that way up to the next harvest.

Also try some older types, which you sometimes can only find at Wochenmarkt/Bauernmarkt etc. Best Case: those might be edible for alergic people. Some people do experience this.

Some you can find pretty everywhere though: Jona Gold, Elster, Boskop. Those mentioned have a different/less hard bite than PinkLady. Boskop also great for baking and applesauce.

  11. Pink Lady ist not a specific type of apple. There is much criticism in general. Ask google to find out more. I wouldn’t eat them.
