No, he hasn’t. The congressman will continue to caucus with the GOP. He just doesn’t want „R-“ in front of his name on TV because it’s terrible for his image to associate with these nazis. But he will continue to vote with them, so functionally, nothing has changed.

He didn’t bolt from the GOP. He still plans to caucus with them and voted with them over 99% of the time.

He just Independent in name only because he knows he has no chance at re-election with an R after his name.

At this point Mike Johnson is running a party with a revolving door and no one’s bothering to hold it open on the way out.

California Republican leaving is actually kind of interesting though. Kiley wasn’t some fringe guy, he was pretty vocal and had a real following. When the „reasonable“ ones start walking, that’s not a blip, that’s a pattern.

Johnson’s majority is so thin that every defection genuinely matters. Like, this isn’t symbolic. One person can tank a vote. He has basically no room for error and the error count is going up.

Curious how his district responds to this. California GOP seats are already on life support. Does going independent help him survive 2026 or does it just split his voter base?

  4. > On March 6, 2026, Kiley announced he would run for re-election in 2026 as an independent in California’s 6th congressional district, and formally dropped the party label on March 9.

It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. Let’s see if it pays off for ‚em. ~~He will be against Ami Bera.~~

The rest of them better jump ship before the election, if you stay a Republican now, expect to lose. I would not support someone who was a Republican because I know the support the platform of greed, selfishness, bigotry, racism and hate.

These guys say they’re going to be independents but their voting record shows they’re going to be republicans.
    IINOs independents in name only.

  7. Kiley sucks just like the rest of them. Changing the R before his name to an I doesn’t change the damage he’s helped facilitate to this nation.

So this guy thinks people will be fooled by an I instead of a R and not remember how and what he voted for?

  9. >“I reached a decision that, since gerrymandering seeks to elevate partisanship above everything else in our politics and governance, seeks to make it the sum and substance of our politics, then the best way to counter gerrymandering and its insidious impacts on democracy is simply to take partisanship out of the equation,” Kiley said.

Same gaslighting BS, same refusal to take accountability for his and his party’s actions. This is just a last ditch effort to get the R from in front of his name so he doesn’t take the hit for the things he’s voted for and actively supported publicly.

    Good.

Even recognizing this guy’s only switching to Independent as an election strategy, its good the Republican brand has become so toxic people dont want to associate with it.

The whole party needs to die off at this point and be replaced with an actual political party, not a hate cult.

And once we are free from the Republican cesspool we can start on killing off the establishment wing of the democratic party and replacing them with a viable political party too.

  11. Ah yes…another coward who will simply put the word „former“ in front of his GOP affiliation, and all of a sudden will remember he has a spine.

    Absolute scum.

  12. Yea, it’s like he’s on the Titanic and begging for a spot on a lifeboat while dressed in drag. Sorry, my dude… we’re not buying it

Don’t let these rats run from their R label by going independent. Call them out

I live in his district. Kiley is the worst. Complete slimeball, avoids his constituents at all costs and always voted for Trump’s agenda.

  15. Technically, it makes it slightly harder for Mikey to maintain control. Practically, it’s just a way to keep voting MAGA when you don’t want the consequences

  16. He got redistricted by Prop 50. He went Independent to try to trick his new district into voting for him. Trust me as one of his constituents, he is very much a MAGA fellating Republican. The only thing he changed was a letter.

  17. HellovahBottomCarter on

Stop this misleading ass headline crap.

He has only “left the party” because CA redistricted him and he is likely to lose his next election if he still calls himself a Republican.

He’s hoping if he goes “independent” without changing a single stance, belief or position enough low-information voters will be bamboozeld into voting for him when they wouldn’t otherwise – and once he gets into office will quickly switch back to Republican.

    He’s MAGA. Plain and simple.

Kiley’s office told us, a business in his district, to stop seeking representation from him and his office.

He was unwilling to speak out against tariffs, but instead his office told us they believed the tariffs were lawful and would send us the legal conjecture they believed supported them. They did not.

They told us they believed Trump’s unlawful tariffs would push us to make our products domestically, despite educating them for an hour that we couldn’t, and it wouldn’t.

They told us they believed Trump’s unlawful tariffs would help us „get even with China“ despite the fact that we’ve never paid a $1 to China in tariffs.

Kiley’s office took our info when we said we would be visiting his D.C. Congressional offices to help facilitate a visit. They then ghosted us and refused to reply or take an appointment.

When not my business, but our TRADE ASSOCIATION, reached out to speak with him about the harm his inaction in tariffs was having on our whole INDUSTRY, he refused the meeting stating OUR individual business had already been helped. They refused to meet with my trade association board of directors a second time when I asked they meet without me whatsoever.

His office regularly takes messages and voicemails and does not reply.

I’ve been hung up on multiple times.

Kiley has intentionally helped inundate our local public school with MAGA Evangelical partisans who keep their children out of public schools and work proactively to stoke culture wars within them.

He is a member of the MAGA Party through and through, and has the support of local MAGA Party members as well.

We will not forget, and we do not trust him. He is a coward who will not speak with or face his constituents.

He has a 98% track record supporting the MAGA Party line.

    Kiley is MAGA.
