So let me guess, further isolation from anyone but the US.

Then when Trump starts a war and sends the EU into depression we beg him for oil and gas and we use all the money we dont have to pledge to buy his weapons? Brilliant

The EU has economic power, but foreign policy unity has always been its biggest challenge.

All the headlines I been reading over the past year are like: „The EU must become (insert any version)“. In reality, nothing happens at all. The EU still cannot clearly say whether it supports Iran or the US in the current conflict, even though the war has been going on for more than a week.

Is that the same von der Leyen who negotiated with Trump over a trade deal some months ago and achieved basically nothing at all?

    5. Yes, although this would involve Von der Leyen keeping out of foreign policy and leaving it to High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, who is paid to do the job.

Again a thoughtful contributions to real unity because unity has never meant 100%. There will always be dissenters that still want their place at the table.
They didn’t get their way every time, no one does, does that mean the value of the organization is diminished, of course not. That’s the strength of excellence.

Oh, no! Top European bureaucrat says tat current last call for Europe is so fucking very last, final, important. Any actions beside words?

First we need an army. You can’t make foreign policy without a stick. Putin and Trump will laugh us out of the room unless we have a gun under the table.

All that’s needed for this is voting a budget then recruiting people, building up factories and research. Then we have to be able to vote for an executive directly who will command the army. From here on foreign policy is easy.

As an American, I remember in elementary school reading about the Articles of Confederation, which preceded the current US Constitution. As I recall, the reason we adopted our current US Constitution was that while the Articles of Confederation gave great latitude to the various US states independence, it was nearly impossible for the US to engage in coordinated activity, whether it be taxation or even foreign policy, because a small group of states could block any kind of decision. It seems to be a little bit like what the European Union is experiencing now.

    11. >In times of radical change like ours, we can either cling to what used to make us strong and defend habits and certainties that history has already moved beyond, or we can choose a different destiny for Europe.

Riiiight, talking about destiny here. I mean I agree we need change, but it’s something that Europeans should decide, not a committee of bureaucrats.

Maybe supporting a genocide wasn’t a good idea after all? – Oh it still was? My bad.

You mean as in, actually act instead of just saying „beware, we’ll soon retaliate… maybe“ ?

As a start, we need an independent policy that doesn’t just copy what the US does.

    15. I fully agree, but where is the competence to do so? The last thing we need is another don Quixote, armed with power points, leading an army of overpaid consultants into the unknown, on a mission to preach European values to the rest of the world. But I fear that is exactly what the good lady has in mind.

I don’t think change or innovation are strengths of Europe.

EU countries are free to offer aid to Ukraine individually.

The so called loan is not a loan because it will never be repaid.

    18. L Europa dovrebbe fare tante cose che tanto non farà, perché è un covo di corrotti e adulatori di lobbisti USA

    19. Little more and we could believe that she was not in her position since already many years.
