      For those unfamiliar: The 1915–1916 Gallipoli Campaign was a failed Allied amphibious attack attempting to take control the Dardanelles Strait (similar geographic chokepoint to the Strait of Hormuz), knock the Ottoman Empire out of World War I, and open supply lines to Russia. The Allied forces stalled and ultimately retreated after eight months, after something like 250k casualties on both sides (500k total).

      I’m sure setting up American carrier groups just offshore of Iran could have no significant risks.

      EU, Russia, India, and China have mostly sat out of the US’s recent moves in the Western Hemisphere, but I’ll bet taking the Strait of Hormuz is where the line is crossed. That threatens the bottom line and security of every country and perhaps more importantly, the political legitimacy of their ruling politicians

      Please tell me that 1000’s of years of military strategy, and 40 years of plotting included securing Hormuz right off the bat.

      Isn’t that the most pivotal area you could imagine controlling for long term security and dominance?

      I mean sure put in a base run patrols that serves American interests. But it isn’t cheap and runs counter to Trump’s previous FP goals.
