Has anyone else noticed an uptick of people in various social settings saying the most heinous or disrespectful things about strangers or people in every day life?
Why do you think casual hostility has become a new social norm? Do you think social media has fueled insecurities, inferiority/superiority complexes, general hatefulness? Or is there a little more nuance to the discussion with a number of key contributing factors?

Anonymity + lack of consequences = shitty behavior

really liked the part about “increasing our sense of common humanity” and how most of social media is not so prosocial in the end

Social Media over time has become less social and more media thanks to algorithm driven rage-bait content that makes people agitated and act hostile towards strangers on social networks.

I suspect people have been this shitty before social media. One thing that social media does is give us a window into so many more humans private lives than we ever had before. Our biases tend to conflate awareness with actuality.

So long as the cheapest way to hold our attention is to keep us afraid we are on the technological fast track for self destruction. Hopefully ASI is able to speed things up.

Shameless behavior always thrives in anonymity. The reason most people did NOT do it in the past was you would be shamed by your neighbors. Bring back Shame.
