Because they are. Quebec swings extreme. The NDP were a bit of a protest vite, who had a moment when people were so sick of the other parties, they rallied behind the NDP. Now, they need to rebuild and be there when workers realize the other parties are not what they need.
NPD failure should be studied for years to come. It’s insane, for the first time in decade, the province vote massively for a federalist party, abandon the Bloc and was ready to go full NPD. I’m an independantist and I voted for the NPD, because for the first time in my life, I got some faith in Canada.
Then Canada, wanting to keep the „two solitudes“ going on, gave us a conservative majority, because why not fuck us over? Can you believe it, we could have had a NPD government if the RoC did not completely shit the bed.
Then the NPD decided that winning was too hard, let’s completely fumble everything and abandon their Québec support for some bullshit.
The first time I got convinced by federalists, and all I got was a slap in the face for believing it.
The NDP has been on the endangered species list in Québec going back to before 2019. This shouldn’t surprise anyone. Alexandre Boulerice should be able to leave en paix and not have to shoulder the whole province for a party that fundamentally never integrated to us.
The NDP membership actively chose not to build upon their success in Quebec because it meant compromising somewhat on what their definition of a progressive platform looks like. There are loads of stories about how freaked out many activists were by the orange wave, instead of energized.
Quebec has a flavour of left wing that’s more economically focused, and at the time, the NDP was all about the social values signalling instead of talking about things the working classes prioritize. The debates have also shown that they don’t take Quebec seriously enough to put up even one candidate who speaks the language even moderately well (we don’t demand fluency, Carney is not fluent), which is basically an omission that they’re not going to compete in this sphere anymore.
The NDP isn’t in danger of dying in Quebec, it already has. I live in Boulerice’s riding, we vote for Boulerice, we don’t vote for the NDP. When he leaves there is 0% chance it stays NDP.
Can Boulerice be of any remarkable aid to Québec Solidaire if as NDP Québec Lieutenant he was unable to achieve anything while NDP support in Québec steadily declined? Is this guy good at his job beyond getting personally elected? You’d think this would maybe give Québec Solidaire leadership pause, but maybe they’re happy to get whatever they can get.
Maybe it’s all Singh’s fault for immutable factors and Boulerice had no chance of improving the situation no matter what he did, but got to admit that that’s not a very satisfying situation.
