Joining wiuld be hard,
But what we can do is have not just a free trade agreement that only benifits the rich, but free movement as well.
And start adopting EU regulations and standards for both red tape reduction between our economies but also because their standards better align with Canadian Values.
The EU would slaughter all our parasitic rent seeking sacred cows, it is ridiculous to even contemplate it.
If our highest national principle is ensuring that we will overpay for butter that is indistinguishable from margarine, we’re not going to get anywhere negotiating EU membership.
Let’s do it.
The benefits outweigh the costs; we could be Associate EU Members (2nd tier membership like the UK or Norway).
No need to adopt the Euro.
We can standardize safety and some other regimes, however: I would welcome European Safety Regime cars into Canada, we’d have a lot more choice and competition that is we just stay with North American Safety Regime vehicles.
Considering that people in Alberta and Quebec whine because they’re part of Canada, imagine their outrage if they had to submit to the stricter economic and environmental rules of the EU.
Oil from bituminous sands would probably be even less popular than natural gas from Russia!
I’m not sure why this trial balloon keeps getting floated, it’s never going to happen. It would require the agreement of the EU member states and a constitutional amendment in Canada both of which are non-starters.
Joining fully wouldn’t work for us because it would end CUSMA, but we should absolutely try to participate in as many EU initiatives as possible such as the collective science funding programs. Our participation in defence procurement is a great start.
We’re a new world country and we should remain as such. We can be as friendly as we want with Europe, but we’re not European we’re North American.
CANZUK is better, the EU is incredibly stagnant and bureaucratic. Look at what Hungary is doing to the EU. Ally with the EU but no need to join it permanently
Enough with this BS being discussed. Even existing countries have issues with the EU.
The federal government would also not be able to negotiate this on their own, the provinces would have to agree, as many areas where EU has oversight are exclusive provincial jurisdiction under the Constitution. So either the Canadian Constitution would have to be amended (good luck) or the provinces would have to agree to allow the EU to have oversight over their laws and regulations (ROFLMAO).
It’s dead on arrival. About time any further discussion about this be banned.
The platitudes are nice….but It’s not going to happen. Most EU countries are economic and political basket cases.
Sure do anything but solve our domestic problems such as affordability, taxes etc. he cares more about everyone else than his “own” country that hasn’t been his “own” country in quite sometime.
Mr PM, why does your family continue to maintain residence in the US?
