Of all the “that sounds expensive” ideas one could float out there, this would’ve been pretty close to the top of the list.

I’m liking the SK deal a lot. Again who knows what other deals are promised behind the scenes. But that deal looks good

I don’t think a split buy was ever a realistic option
I’ve heard a rule of thumb is to have three naval vessels for each one you need on the job: one deployed, one returning and needing rest and repairs, and one working up and training for the next deployment
If we have 3 oceans to patrol (west, east, north), that means 9 subs total
Splitting the buy would introduce so many challenges re manning, maintenance, and training. It’s not like the helmsman or sonar operator on one type is going to be qualified to work on another. It’s not like the spare periscope for one is going to fit on another.

I said this when we got the article saying they were „weighing the idea of doing a split fleet,“ but it’s fine to consider it, as that shows you are really looking at all possibilities. However, we NEED a single platform. The fact that they considered all possibilities but are sticking to only one or the other is a good thing. It means they are taking it seriously

Unless Canada can grown money from thin air a double fleet was never an option.
I do think the VLS capability on the Korean subs and their extended range make this choice a no brainer though.

Splitting the bids was pure lunacy. Increased operational costs, and both bidders are not happy. The SK deal sounds stellar in all aspects. The German deal was just submitted on March 2nd, so details will eventually be released. I don’t see how they can top the SK deal in all honesty. A superior sub that has already been in the water since 2021, delivered faster. This, before you even consider the „extras“ that they are throwing in outside the subs themselves.

Glad to see this. And crossing fingers for the Korean fleet. Don’t mess this up DND.

Would be nice to open new markets.

It would be crazy to do so with the requirement of two maintenance contracts and two supply chains to service the boats.
