News snippet: Keir Starmer has said the Iran conflict engulfing the Middle East could continue “for some time” as he urged Donald Trump that the “best way forward” longer term was a negotiated settlement with Tehran.
The prime minister said the UK was doing “everything we can” to de-escalate the situation, a clear contrast to the US president who is focused on regime change and has said it was “too late” for the Iranian regime to negotiate.
At a Downing Street press conference, he defended his decision to block initial offensive strikes by the US and Israel at the weekend, saying he “stands by” his judgment but denying that it had damaged the special relationship.
However, Starmer has faced some criticism from Gulf states and Cyprus for failing to do enough to protect regional allies and British citizens there from Iranian strikes. He has also been subject to personal attacks from Trump.
The prime minister insisted that “all ministers” on the national security council had supported the UK position on the use of British bases, after reports he faced cabinet opposition, led by the energy secretary, Ed Miliband.
In that case the regime definitely survives and we are in the same Situation again in 5 years.
Well, Iran was attacked during the last two negotiations it had with the US. Fool me once etc…
A negotiated settlement that includes what? A nuclear agreement like they already signed and which the USA withdrew from?
Why would they trust any idea of negotiations after being burned twice?
The current US administration has a history of reneging on deals anyway. How can you negotiate with an entity that can change its mind on a whim.
The worst thing that can happen is the regime remains and gets sanction relief to strengthen itself while it bides time with the best fake smiles. Only thing the US and Israel should offer is not to attack them.
Negotiate with who? The country that talks like a madman gettign a hard-on at death and destruction, the country that attacks diplomats and people negotiating, the country that decides to randomly rip up its deals not only with „enemies“ but also with allies? The US under Trump is not a serious country. They only understand force, which is why they’re now seething as Iran decided to actually stand up to them rather than bend the knee like most other countries do when Trump threatens them
Trump’s America motto has been „the strong do what they can, suck it up international law losers!“. Well now they can live with it
