It’s a country of 91 million people that is 50% more area than Iraq and Afghanistan combined on topography that isn’t a stretch to compare to Mordor. Invading and occupying Iran would make every US „police action“ of the last 60 years look like a nice holiday.

Iran is a multitude more competent and organized than Afghanistan with a wholly inhospitable terrain. After 20 years of occupation in Afghanistan the US replaced the taliban with the taliban. And that was a justified invasion that had a lot of public support in the US at the start, and may continued to have support if Bush hadn’t tied Iraq to it. This will either end in a quagmire costing hundreds of billions and 1000s of US casualties or it will end in the US just quitting.

Whether or not we have a ground invasion is completely up to the White House, because congress just denied itself a say in acts of war.

This war is only a symptom of the true problem in America which is the shrinking of democracy and handing over virtually carte Blanche to the office of the president (who happens to be staffed by a psycho).

You don’t just need a new President, you need to shift power of countries decisions back to the states representatives.

All of you arguing about who would win… who cares? What do we gain to topple Iran? What would happen to the country afterwards, since Hegseth said we are not building a democracy? All a ground invasion would do is kill a lot of people. No winners.

Second the US puts boots in the ground, we loose the war. This would make Afghanistan look like a cake walk

  6. The US is not going to land one soldier in Iran. A land invasion would be the worst military decision since Operation Barbarossa.

  7. I get the feeling we will see this guy in another news story involving death pretty soon.

  8. Iran is huge so yeah.. it would take a lot of resources to do a ground invasion which would be a total waste of lives, time and money just to get the same result of every action in the middle east.

Ground Invasion = Vietnam all over again except with mountains and deserts, not to mention the millions upon millions of religious individuals who will likely not appreciate foreigners coming in and causing even more bloodshed.

    Recipe for disaster.

  10. Invasion, destruction, domination? Easy.

Occupation? Christ no. If there were a genuine desire and plan for a new secular government, we wouldn’t need to occupy, but any concerted insurgency from even a marginal percent of the populous, would be insurmountable.

The difference here is that you’re a totalitarian regime, based a hard right muslim view.

The US will utilize the blitzkreig (aka Shock and Awe).

You’re going to see large amounts of defection, and surrendering before you actually get anywhere.

  12. The US wants to drive a civil war. Only 20% of Iranians support the regime. So the US just need to create rather right conditions.

  13. cletus_spuckle on

But is Iran confident that the US would actually attempt a ground invasion?

The bunker busters and tomahawks seem to be doing plenty of work

  14. Iran is in Asia. Starting a land war in Asia is, so I’m told, a bad idea.

  15. There is no way in hell America can win a ground war. I don’t even think this is what they are going to do.
They are going to just keep bombing and hoping something happens.

We could invade, wipe out their military and march into Tehran in a matter of weeks. We showed that capability during Desert Storm.

It’s the continued occupation and trying to “win their hearts and minds” that would be a disaster. We cannot plunge the country into chaos and then walk away. Likewise, we cannot leave an occupying force in situ.

We need a clear and well defined objective, which I’m sure doesn’t exist with this current leadership.

Trump won’t be sending in ground troops. He’ll just bomb the government into submission until the people have had enough.

  18. WillCode4Cats on

Realistically speaking, unless the US results to unfettered war crimes, then Iran is likely right.

Mountains are bullshit levels of difficult for attacking forces.

  19. „You’re not stupid enough to send ground troops.“

I’LL SHOW YOU JUST HOW STUPID I AM

A response that’ll probably happen within 48 hours and be lauded by the right. Sales of „I’m with stupid“ shirts will skyrocket and somehow prop up the economy for 3 weeks as his idiot cult maxes out card after card after card because he promises to wipe the debt of people who vote how he wants them to in the midterms.

  20. Man, it’s too bad we don’t have any recent examples of ground occupations of middle eastern countries to help inform our decisions.

  21. Elisian_Knight on

I’m confident Iran is full of shit. I mean what else can they say? “If the US comes in with an invasion force it’s our ass” isn’t exactly something that inspires the troops.

  22. Universal_Cup on

Fuck everything else. Show us the estimated price tag (money, materials, men) and we’ll balk… give or take 20 years.

  23. I could see the U.S. easily taking control of Kharg Island with a Marine Expeditionary Force. It would be relatively straightforward and easily defensible after gaining control. The US could completely control Iran’s oil industry.

Whilst fighting Kurdish resistance in the north west, Belochi resistance in the south east and popular uprising across the country all while yoive lost control of your air space? I mean sure if want to give that a try youre welcome to but youre better off negotiating terms of surrender i hear Russia is just awesome in the winter you be fine.

  25. trashcan_paradise on

Weren’t they also confident they could protect their supreme leader too?

  26. OccidoViper on

Iran is too big and terrain is not suitable for occupation. It would require a much bigger ground force than what we used in Afghanistan. Americans don’t have the appetite for another war like this but I doubt Trump will care either way

  27. myowngalactus on

Trumps is going to personally launch himself, using the world’s largest catapult aimed at Iran, and lead the ground invasion himself if they don’t stop taunting him. Then they’ll really be sorry.

  28. nastymachine on

Remember during the Iraq invasion, there was nonstop talk about the elite iraqi republican guard. News sources everywhere were saying this this going to be a bloodbath, and they would fight to the last. Twasn’t. I believe they surrendered immediately.

  29. No_Yoghurt2313 on

Trump should perhaps ask the oracle in Delphi about what will happen if he goes all in with boots on the ground?
