I doubt this surprises anyone.
As expected when this administration cuts on everything important like education and health care. The things that Finns have been proud and only things that actually was good here turned to sh*t. Now this country is just sad to live in.
Part of it is all the reforms or innovations to teaching when we were already among the best. Lowering the bar to pass and expecting that kids will do worse than what they could do if they were pushed to be better.
Part of it is the top countries shifting their curriculums so that they would score better specifically in PISA tests.
Part of it is the changes to how people spend their free time with the rise of social media and smartphones.
Part of it is the changes to culture and how teachers aren’t meant to be only teaching now but also raising and disciplining children and how parents know better than the stupid schools or woke teachers.
Part of it is foreign students that do poor on tests when they can’t understand the questions and are less motivated to learn and have less support from home.
Cutting costs to education and youth services and free time activities and places certainly haven’t helped.
diversity ideas lowering the bar for passing, people became dumber with phones and especially now with AI, government decreasing funding… no wonder
Its the thing that everything has become a business and needs to make profit or atleast cut the losts.
Increased non western immigration is of course a cause.
I don’t look at the PISA results very keenly as a layperson. It’s such a complicated thing. PISA measures a really narrow area and social issues tend to be much more complicated anyway. But it gives some direction to my own thoughts. So I read about it and I’m pretty sure I agree with this (link) if you have to elevate one thing above a million others.
„In Finnish public discussion, you can hear both proud and concern comments related to the PISA. When analysing the results more closely, it has been found that the performance gap between pupils has increased. Learning outcomes are affected by the family background more and more. Pupils, whose parents’ educational level is the lowest, have the biggest falls in skills.“
