While yes we need new houses, I do sympathise with the residents. It’ll completely change the area and make it more dangerous for children.
There must be a better way than to turn a quiet cul de sac into an access road for 611 houses. The alternative would probably involve less profit for the developer though so obviously it wont be considered.
At some stage large scale residential developments need to follow the same path as renewable energy projects under the renewable energy directive (latest amendment) and make these projects a matter of public interest which override this bullshit

This appears to be close to infrastructure (Luas red line) and amenities (Citywest shopping centre). They can fuck right off.

So the primary complaint here is that they’re converting a cul-de-sac into an access road.
Look at the plans. There will be two other (better) exits to the development, and the densest parts of the development are located beside those other exits.
The plan to turn this cul-de-sac into a through road has existed for over a decade, so I’ve got no sympathy with people complaining about it now. It was part of the LAP at least since 2012.
Just stinks of pulling the ladder up. If they didn’t like it, they should have moved before it happened.
What this development also has is land zoned for two schools. Which will be great for the families living in the existing development and the new development.
But of course the whingers won’t mention that.

Let’s face it, it _is_ shit having 1,000 new people teleported into your back yard.
You _might_ get more amenities long-term, but the way things are done here, you’re much more likely to get a few hundred more cars clogging the place up, a money-laundering nail bar, and more dickheads on scramblers.
And still, we must build.
A lot of people just reading the headline. There are genuine infrastructure issues with all the building going on. We’re already seeing it in a lot of places where huge housing developments go up and then it’s impossible to find a GP, getting kids into schools, inadequate public transport, crazy traffic at all hours of the day, overcrowded hospitals etc. We need to build homes absolutely but proper planning for the future needs to go hand in hand with that home building
classic NIMBYism, however, if these are supposed to be social houses, I can kinda relate…
the other thing is that instead of building houses they should start building high-rise apartment complexes, given the rapid population growth and limited land…

The number of councillors and TDs lining up with the entitled gobshite resident associations but also what you don’t see because it isn’t organised are the large numbers of people who favour development.
This Reddit thread shows that.
I imagine the residents are not fuming about the houses at all. What the are annoyed about is the complete lack of supporting infrastructure that will be provided with the 611 houses. But anyway it’s sort of a headline so at least that.
Fuming rolls downhill – previous resident fume about current residents and current resident fume about future resident, and so on….
Citywest is 100% already overdeveloped, traffic is horrible, no amenities, red line is well over capacity already
Nothing learned from the Celtic tiger years
I know people around here will say this is NIMBYism but just for some actual context in the situation:
1. Citywest/Saggart has increased already 400%+ of the population 6 years ago to around the population of Carlow county
2. This isn’t the first time in the area that there were issues with planning ignoring the local development plan and concerns both from the SDCC and from local residents about provision of services in the area
3. The Citywest Hotel since the last round of big development has become a permanent direct provision centre housing hundreds of people and also putting pressure on the local area even regardless of the new houses and apartments being built
4. The area has a Luas line not too far away correct and does have a shopping centre with necessities but has no GP availability, no garda station, community centre, there is a GAA pitch the other side of Saggart but not really walking distance and they have recently started refusing use of their hall for community use like a kids playtime on Saturdays was cancelled and there is no alternative venues really. This is a 5 minute walk from one of the biggest riots in the country last year and it is 20 minutes to 3 different Garda stations 2 of which aren’t even open 24/7 365 days a year. Given the gov now own the hotel there was talk of the minister for state giving land to the Gardai to put a permanent Garda station there but there hasn’t been any movement yet on that at least that I can see.
5. This area though at least is the correct side of the area where there is already a park but a key problem here is road availability is pretty poor because it is the other side of the N7, the Citywest road is the main artery for traffic in the area and it is single lane both ways and no room to expand it so adding any more pressure the road just will choke the area more than it already is. Part of that is related to heavy traffic but a lot of it is commuting because of the business campus but also just the amount of people in the area that need to commute
6. It brings up a kind of a huge social issue as well which is political will and the ability to lobby for services which happens quite a lot in areas of substantial development in a way and could settle down over time but meant that there isn’t really a voice speaking up for services in the area. SDCC are making a movie studio with their LDT, they are putting some artificial grass pitches in a much lower population area than Citywest but they can’t even get a developer to complete the one neighbourhood park that was required for planning permission 15 years ago and advertised on every brochure for the area as being part of the development.
Basically what I’m saying is the objections are valid because there aren’t good answers to the problems locally that aren’t better answered literally anywhere else. If they were making moves to actually fix things I think there would be less of a backlash but this is actually taking the piss.
