    1. Better to hang out in the middle of the pack and make the playoffs every year, then make a push for the finals, maybe win, likely lose, and spend decades rebuilding.

If Canada can rally other middle powers in this current political climate into an alliance then it effectively becomes a current great power based on that alone.

This is completely delusional.  We’re 40 million people, we don’t have nukes, our security from great power agression is guaranteed by our neighbour’s desire to remain the only great power on the continent, we are a middle power.

Interesting take. But referring to Canada as the world’s „second largest country“ in this context is a bit silly. Geographic expanse does not equal influence.

    5. If we can’t call out the warmongering of our neighbours as wrong because we’re afraid they’ll turn their attention our way, but instead have to „support them with regret,“ then we’re no great power. No middle power, either.

One might even say at that point that we’ve no power at all.

      >>After all, we are surrounded on all sides today by the greatest powers in the world – America to the south, China to the west, Russia across the Arctic, and Europe to the east.

Did the author study at the Sarah Palin school of geography? Does he think crossing the pacific is like stepping across a creek?
