Going to be fun when all the people producing the data for AI to summarise go out of business and the AI suddenly doesn’t have anywhere to pull info from

It is a very interesting take on how technology is evolving due to AI from Google displaying the result of the search without having to click a link, Reddit and people searching on AI applications directly. It’s full of charts but if you are into these kind of things it is a good read.

Some publications have suffered massive traffic losses:
* Digital Trends went from 8.5M to 265K monthly visits.
* ZDNet dropped from 7.6M to 769K.
* TechRadar went from 15.6M to 4M.

Just feed the AI all the content it wants for free, and then let publishers starve to death.

90% of the traffic to my technical blog is AI now, and my blog is real niche … all about disassembling z80-based games from the 80’s – I don’t quite understand why it’s being scraped so much!
I don’t think it’s long before AI is going to start suggesting building websites in z80, it’s a natural progression

This is why Google is a dangerous monopoly and must be broken up. If you block Google’s bots you will not be included in search but if you allow them then you basically are forced to give away your content for free. It’s a lose-lose situation.

There are going to be losers and winners of AI

Also paywalled – tomshardware for example. No point checking it anymore.
And we lost anandtech some time ago.
Also nothing exciting is happening in tech industry for the past few years. Even CES is no more about consumer but corpos.

The Internet is pretty much unusable. Endless popups, auto-play videos on sites like Gizmodo. They made their sites unusable.

>We pulled monthly US organic traffic estimates from Ahrefs for ten major English-language tech publications from February 2024 through January 2026. For each site, **we identified the peak traffic month and compared it to January 2026**
What kind of methodology is that? At least do a proper YoY comparison or average the historical months over a 3/6/12 month window. Or do a rolling window of average monthly traffic, presumably the decline didn’t start in January, google has been doing its AI summaries for awhile.
Immediately this makes me question the rest of the analysis.

And companies are firing their marketing and content writing staff because all they see if traffic is down and think they aren’t doing enough.
