4 years. We had 4 years to learn from Ukraine about how to deal with the threat of drones and these morons did nothing.

Started a war with *the* originator of the kamikaze drone and thought, “Surely we’ll kill all of the launchers in 48 hrs!”

    Fuckin hubris man.

  2. Soon 50cal. On toyotas and HUMMWV hunting Drones 😄 like in ukraine and russia

  3. With the amount of money Qatar has to throw away, this only gives them a reason to upgrade

For context, this radar installation is for space surveillance. It can give long-distance early warning for ballistic missile launches.

The U.S. has 3 of these FPS-132’s in Cape Cod MA, Clear AK and Beale CA for space surveillance. There is also one at Fylingdale UK and Thule Greenland, and these 5 radars gives U.S. forces ballistic missile early warning coverage over the continental United States.

These billion-dollar radar installations are meant to be very far from enemy borders since they are built for long-distance space surveillance, so the one purchased by the Qatari air force is a bit of an outlier, since Iran is just 100 miles away on the other side of the Persian Gulf and can threaten this radar station not only with short-range ballistic missiles but also drones like the Shahed (which was apparently used to attack this installation).

Considering that the Iranians did shoot at Qatar last June after the U.S. stealth bomber strike against Iranian nuclear sites, it should have been a wakeup call for the Qataris that they need to better protect high-value targets like this radar installation. In hindsight installing a couple C-RAMs at this radar site would have been a prudent move.

  5. Does US or Qatar own that radar? And why aren’t they deploying ground CIWS like they did a decade or two ago?
