Authoritarian streak is strong in all East Asian societies. People who travel frequently to China, Korea and Japan can tell you the three countries are all shockingly similar beneath the superficial decorations and pretenses otherwise. It’s also super easy to rally the masses to a nationalist fervor. I feel like tolerant and liberal stages in history are more anomaly than baseline in these countries. Unfortunately we are heading the other direction again.
The more anti-China Japan is, the more it seems to resemble China. It seems that the Japanese right wing is envious of China in some way. Ironically, a powerful and patriotic nation, excluding the idea of socialism, may be the utopia envisioned by the anti-China right wing
Big brother is watching is becoming the norm. All the surveillance system placed for spying is breath taking that George Orwell’s 1984 envisioned.state having total power to observe.
