Last time I talked with colleagues that were close to retirement, they were 55-60 and completely loaded with money, making great plans for the years to come. And with the younger ones we were saying that looking at our financial situation, we were going to be more Freedom 80…

I’m not bad when it comes to retirement funds, but I know it won’t be enough.
I realistically expect to work until I’m at least in my late 70’s. The way it’s going, I’ll probably get written up for missing work to attend my own funeral….

I remember seeing those Freedom 55 commercials as a kid. I was thinking, „Big deal, retire at 55.“ I’m now fairly certain that I’ll be dying on the job.

I recently talked with my mom (young boomer) about Freedom 55. She feels angry and betrayed because she didn’t get to retire at 55 and *literally did not understand that it was an ad for a savings program you had to enroll in and contribute to.* She saw the commercial and thought „oh great, the retirement age will be 55 for me“ despite being a SAHM until 40 and having zero savings.

If you’re young and you’re reading this for the love of God forgoe the car payment and invest. The average car payment in this country costs more than some people’s mortgage, that amount of money invested will make you a multilionare at retirement.

My sister retired at 53.
It can still be done, but you do have to commit to it. Pretty fiercely as well. I could not do what she did to retire by 53.
ETA: To be clear, there’s almost no way I’ll be retiring before 65 though. 14 more years to go. Woo hoo!!!

Gen Z? I’m in my 40’s and I wasn’t planning on retiring in Canada. Just not realistic anymore, As if retirement is an option for most of Gen Z. But they can cross their fingers that by then UBI has already been established and AI has it all taken care of.

Fuck, at least change the work week to 4 days a week. We get it, we’ll have to work until 71 probably. But at least do that. Fuck.

Just a reminder that freedom 55 started when granddad was keeling over at 65 from a life of being overworked. Most people have no idea how expensive geriatric medicine and care will be when they are 65 and after a lifetime of poor health choices start showing up.
And if you’re lucky to not have debilitating disease, your bodies are not designed for longevity. Things break down.
What kills me is how many people are trading in their 20/30s to work for a corporation that pushes them out the door before age 60 when the cost of schooling and elderly care for your parents are at its peak.
Our economy and existing practices were created at a time when people didn’t live long enough to see 70.
We are not prepared economically for a world where there will be just as many people in their golden years as there are in their prime working years.

I can’t understand why headlines like this are always phrasing it like this a new thing. I’m GenX and I will be working until I MAID. Between me and all of my GenX friends, Zero of us own a home. This has been the reality for many for a long time.
EDIT: I just realized its a click-bait heading and I totally got sucked in lol

Don’t hate me. I really paid attention to those ads and the Bobby Orr (?) quote with sociabank: “if you count your nickels and dimes, the dollars will count themselves”.
I retired – through hard work and a lot of luck – at age 53.

Retirement age has been 65 for a long time. This 55 number is made up and insane. Even people who retire at 65 don’t seem to be a want to retire and end up keep working.
