    1. >Sir Keir Starmer has confirmed the UK will bolster its defensive operations after speaking to the president of Cyprus.

      >He says the UK will send helicopters with counter drone capabilities and HMS Dragon to the region.

      >“We will always act in the interest of the UK and our allies,“ he adds.

      >Our security and defence editor Deborah Haynes reported earlier the UK was considering the deployment of a Type 45 air defence destroyer to Cyprus to help defend the RAF bases there.

      >The warship is a Type 45 destroyer – the only piece of equipment in the British arsenal with the ability to shoot down ballistic missiles.

‚You have to call me HMS Dragon‘

‚You have to call *me* HMS Nighthawk‘

    3. It’s got one hell of a journey from Portsmouth to Cyprus.

It should arrive by next weekend if it sets off now…

Presumably the helicopters will be Wildcats armed with Martlets and potentially Crowsnest Merlins? Although I suppose the latter is unlikely when you have Akrotiri’s radar and a Type 45 in the area.

Regardless of your opinion on him generally, Starmer is handling this perfectly in my opinion. A Type 45 is a huge boost to the region and provides a next level of protection should things inevitably get worse. It’s a shame Wedgetail isn’t ready yet, as this would be the perfect situation for the crews to cut their teeth on

    5. About time. Literally the only answer we have to ballistic missiles. Probably should be sending 2 since they are in port anyway.

To defend a base that’s been aiding a genocide for the last two years….

We are the good guys yeah?

    7. A few observations:
      – Obviously the ballistic missile threat was going to be higher in the Med than the North Atlantic. A Type 45 should have been there from the get go.
      – Why haven’t the Crowsnest Merlin’s been deployed? They are sat around doing nothing in Britain but could have made a difference.
      – Will the government now reba d the T83 development team? We cannot afford a repeat of the T23 scenario but with the T45s in the late 2030s. The destroyer fleet clearly needs to be expanded. 6 just isn’t enough the required taskings. We need to return to at least 12 destroyers.
      – Will Diamond or Dragon sail with a full complement of 48 Aster missiles? When Diamond went on ops she had to replenish her silo in Gibraltar after only firing a few missiles.
      – It is beyond embarrassing Daring will not rejoin the fleet with the SeaCeptor upgrade. It has only been 10 years!
      – SeaCeptor upgrade and NSM fitting has been utterly glacial. The Type 45s urgently need the extra 24 missiles that will come from the addition of the SeaCeptor ‘mushroom farm’
      – The way defence is funded needs to change. Whilst the MoD are good at misspending money, the Treasury are actively harming the military and national security.

Good to see the UK actually doing something to support its allies against pure evil that is antithetical to our way of life. Well, our way of life *now*… I’m aware that the demographic shift is entirely inevitable, but for now at least I’m glad we stand against evil and oppression.

This sub the last few days :

Starmer announces UK will allow defensive use of UK bases, after Iran attacks them, despite Starmer denying US use of them to start the war

„How dare he ?! Iraq! US lapdog !“

Then, as the extent of the Iranian attacks becomes undeniably serious

      „Why aren’t our ships there already ?!“

The astroturfing depending on the news cycle is getting obvious and pathetic

    10. But remember we aren’t joining the war just “protecting our allies” who started the war

    11. Should already have been there, alongside one of her sister ships!

Thats being said, the fact the raf have been gutted so badly that it can not fully defend such an important base is nothing short of a disgrace.

Between labour and the tories this country has been utterly fucked over.

But dragon is in dry dock in Portsmouth, HMS Duncan would make more sense as it’s just done OP Sharpshooter

    13. This is a bad move. We have seen how ships are sitting ducks in era of drones and hypersonic missiles. I hope he doesn’t join USA and enforce conscription (I learnt UK has 70,000 army members in TOTAL!!)

    14. A whole ship? Amazing; I bet the mullahs of Tehran are terrified and will surrender when they hear a whole English ship is 800 miles away in Cyprus. Well done Keir!
