It’s already been effectively closed since Saturday. Nobody is insuring these tankers and they are just stationary. There’s no physical closure. Commerce just tends to stop when risk of destruction goes up. US will see oil prices rise the longer this goes and Asia will be cooked. EU will see both oil and natural gas prices spike more than the US will.

Iran speedrunning turning this into a world war.
The world v. Iran.
In any case, the world (west + China) loves their oil and globalized trade, to which maritime commerce through the Persian gulf is *crucial* too much to let it be.
The US already hit (and likely sank) several of their frigates and naval bases. Israel and the US have already decapitated regime leadership, dismantled their integrated air defense apparatus and hunted down most of their ballistic missile transport erector launchers, as well as Shahed drone factories. Wanna bet they can’t hunt down any remaining coastal anti-ship missile batteries?

It’s ok, some redditor will explain why committing literal terrorist acts against civilians is somehow good and Iran is innocent.

I don’t understand Iran’s plan? To piss off anybody they haven’t already pissed off?

They could have at least tried to make this conflict have more unpredictable surprises. The plot has been so scripted and generic so far. 4/10 rating for this season.

“What happens in the Straight of Hormuz?” has always been the big unanswerable question looming over any potential attack on Iran. “Iranian speedboats” have been a meme ever since the 80s. They have been harassing shipping on and off using ordinary civilian-looking speedboats for a very long time, presumably practicing for a day like today.
Closing the Straight hits the Iranian economy hard, too. So the assumption was that they wouldn’t actually do it unless they were put in to a position of having nothing left to lose. These days they wouldn’t even need the boats to be manned.
The only sure-fire way to protect shipping there would be to occupy that part of the Iranian coast.

Nuclear weapons, that’s a bombing. Killing your own people, that’s a bombing. Settin’ ships on fire, you better believe that’s a bombing.

So if Asia oil prices go up, does this push them to buy from Russia? Or we’re hoping they’ll buy from US?
