This is a data representation of all non profit programs found on publicly available 990s for the tax year 2023 categorized by their description. These are the aggregate program expenses, not all expenses for all non-profits.
To create the categorizations we generated embeddings for all program descriptions clustered them, then labelled clusters using an LLM.
Tools used: matplotlib, sentence-transformers, umap, hdbscan.

    2. Interesting, I would have loved to also see a plot normalized by state GDP and another by state population.

Given the size of the MN fraud relative to the nonprofit spend, imagine what it is in CA.

I would think that a huge amount of the contributions is going towards churches. Obviously churches often would fall under food contributions, healthcare etc. But how are the regular church operations categorized? (Pastor salary, outreach events etc.)? Or is the majority excluded because it falls under operating expenses rather than program spend?

    5. A per capita spending comparison would be great to compare against. Also, love how Ohio apparently spends so little on community healthcare but so much on cancer research & treatment.
