Der Präsident der Insel und das britische Verteidigungsministerium teilten am Montag mit, dass eine Drohne über Nacht den Stützpunkt der britischen Royal Air Force in Akrotiri auf Zypern getroffen habe und dabei begrenzten Schaden und keine Verluste verursacht habe. Es war der erste Angriff auf eine britische Militäranlage seit einem Raketenangriff libyscher Militanter im Jahr 1986. Dieser Vorfall stellt eine erhebliche Eskalation des Konflikts dar.
Es war nicht sofort klar, von wo aus die iranische Shahed-Drohne gestartet wurde. Zwei Quellen, die unter der Bedingung anonym zu bleiben, teilten Reuters mit, dass britische Stützpunkte die zweite Drohne abgefangen hätten.
Während die Stützpunkte als britisches Hoheitsgebiet gelten, ist Zypern selbst Mitglied der EU und hat derzeit die rotierende EU-Präsidentschaft inne.
