      One important factor is that the states (and feds) do more. Or more importantly cities do less. Cities don’t do policing or schools. They mostly just do garbage and libraries and smaller streets and that’s about it.

      Also Australia is considered it have a much better administrative system than Canada. Shit just (mostly) works and the public expect government to get things done. Again not perfect but better from my experience

      So there are probably lots of things we can learn from Australia, but one thing we can’t learn is how to have milder winters. The hidden cost of freeze-thaw cycles on our built environment means that countries without harsh winters will always have more options at a lower cost. I’m sure there are engineers here who could speak to this better than me but there are so many design choices for public spaces that are not economical when you consider our climate and how some public features would only be usable for half the year.
