>An RAF Typhoon jet operating out of Qatar has shot down an Iranian drone.
>This is the first time a UK jet has shot down a drone since the US and Israel began their strikes on Iran.
>The RAF deployed a squadron of Typhoons to Qatar earlier this year as tensions in the region increased.
>The defence secretary has made clear that the UK military’s enhanced presence in the region is to defend UK forces and interests, and that the UK is not participating in the US-led strikes.
>RAF jets have been flying defensive patrols out of Qatar and RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus since the US and Israel launched their military strikes.
Always interesting to see the amount of people on this sub arguing that the UK shouldn’t defend itself or its allies.
Lol…we aren’t taking part by defending ourselves. We cant afford to replace that shit
The UK is right to defend itself and its interests. But also, the UK doesn’t *really* need to be in the area in the first place…
Glad they shot it down
Does make me wonder, how much did the missile cost vs the drone?
Ah google AI to the rescue, £200,000 for the short range missiles and the Shahad drones cost around £15k.
Oof.
Defence is fine, I don’t see any reason we shouldn’t
Let’s see where it goes
Please please please just let this be defensive, I so don’t want us to be involved in yet another yank Middle Eastern war
I would like to know the cost of destroying the drone. And how much the drone costs to get to an enemy.
Fuel and weapons prices for that one engagement, I wonder how this fares economically?
Any ideas?
Iran has a right to defend itself. UK has a right to defend itself, and its allies. Nothing to see here. Whether the US/Israel was right to start this, another matter altogether.
Fully support the UK working defence in the area.
It’s unstable and countries that aren’t directly involved are being hit. Allies are being hit. By a terrorist state.
Israel and the US don’t need help. The US isn’t even really trying here.
