      Out of curiosity, why did they deem him a valuable target? As far as I know he has been out of the picture for quite some time. He even was disallowed to run for president in 2024.

      This might have been a misstep. He was very popular among reformers and pro-democracy groups as well as the working class. No doubt killed to prevent him from becoming more influentual in a new regime given his anti-israel and anti-american stances, but risks potentially building support for the regime against foreign interlopers.
