>The United States and Israeli strikes against Iran [began only hours ago](https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/28/world/middleeast/trump-iran-strikes-video.html), but there’s already one clear lesson for the rest of the world: If you have a nuclear weapon, you are safe from potential U.S. attack, and if you don’t have a nuclear weapon, you are vulnerable. In 2018, President Trump violated a multilateral nuclear agreement—the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran—that was working. Less than a decade later, he has decided with no sound legal or military justification to launch a barrage of military strikes with the apparent aim of toppling the Iranian regime. This is the clearest but by no means only example of a country without a nuclear weapon falling victim to illegal American military attack. The long-term consequences will likely be a large-scale increase in the number of countries who possess nuclear weapons, something that will undermine American and global security for generations to come.
This is the same debate people had after the U.S. pulled out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action. Whether you liked the deal or not, it at least created guardrails. Once that was gone, escalation became way easier.
Donald Trump have always been dangerous and he is not the man that make the world a better place.
Nine nations have nuclear weapons – Russia, the United States, China, France, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, India, Israel, and North Korea. If you’re a nation not allied with the US, the question is whether you’re allied with a nation that would defend you. And if you’re allied with the US, Trump is clearly willing to change even long-standing assumptions. All bets are off these days.
The subject isnt about Trump or today. Its 3 nuclear powers invading a Ukraine that gave up nukes. Its about US security guarantees not worth the paper they are printed on.
Everyone needs nukes. Deterrence stops war full stop. I pick a failure to respond to Russia releasing Novichok and murdering EU citizens as the end of deterrence.
How long before someone just full on bombs us here in the US?
A Republican President just started an unjustified war?
Who could have predicted that?
Aside from everyone who was alive in 2003.
Note to self.
Canada
Oh I don’t know. All “blitzkrieg” operations have had such happy endings.
He lied and did the one thing everyone told him not to do. You are left to blame for this!
this headline isn’t some overreaction, it literally feels like we woke up in a timeline where every move abroad turns into an existential crisis.
whether or not you like the guy, framing a policy choice as “making the world more dangerous” is exactly the tone people react to.
the weird part is how quickly the shock meter resets — yesterday it was tension rising, today it’s “much more dangerous.”
like we went from mild unease to apocalypse vibes in one headline scroll.
Another war without a declaration from congress. The downhill acceleration continues. The absolute worst president of all time must be removed from office.
While yes, fuck this admin, hasn’t this always been the case? Iraq backed down on nuclear weapons and Dubya invaded. Libya backed down and Obama enabled regime change. Ukraine made agreements to hand over theirs in return for safety guarantees that weren’t worth the paper they were written on. North Korea is an international pariah but nuclear weapons guarantees their security.
Nuclear weapons are the only thing that guarantees national sovereignty from major powers and it’s been true for decades. We’ve done this to ourselves.
„No new wars“ > Israel First policy
I’m not gonna cry about the murdering regime in Iran, but this is a “some of you may die” scenario I don’t think we should be in.
A lot of people who never signed up for this will pay dearly.
Team America was a documentary.
The United States is Israel’s bitch
the US is a existantial threat to the rest of the world at this point.
Remember when people voted for him for „cheaper eggs“ and „no new wars?“ I do because I have never voted for that lying piece of shit and I’m furious that 77 million Americans fell for the grift *again.*
I’m so fucking tired
I wonder how the anti American trash who voted for him because they wanted cheap gas are going to feel when gas prices skyrocket soon? At least they can fall back on the cheap groceries… oh, wait
Only way to prevent getting your ass walloped by US bombs or one of its proxies (Israel) is to get a nuke
It’s crazy to think I MIGHT see war within the US soil in my lifetime. Keep collecting enemies.
Duh, we already showed security guarantees are worth bupkiss, look at Ukraine who gave up Nukes for our guarantee of security. If you don’t want to be Ukraine or Iran you need nukes and a lot of em ASAP. Australia, Japan, Germany, South Korea especially as USA is a pretty unpredictable Ally under It’s current dictatorship
He’s going to be dead soon. He doesn’t give a fuck what happens to anyone else.
Can we all be real here. Every country could build nukes and this idiot would still fling missiles at them not caring since he’s sick and dying anyways. Impeachment was made for this and we’re not doing it for the worst case scenario.
Donald Trump committed treason by bypassing congress to start a war.
For those who doubt this.
A reminder, Bush Jr. laid out the “Axis of Evil”.
It was: Iran, Iraq and North Korea.
It’s self evident that North Korea did the right thing (for their interests) to build nuclear weapons.
This is why, you don’t do what they’re doing to Iran. International Law doesn’t matter. The US and will do whatever it wants to do. All you have left is to make yourself unpalatable to an invasion. So you build nukes.
If you still doubt it, why do you think Russia isn’t fighting Europe while in Ukraine. It’s nuclear weapons. That’s what it is.
As a Canadian, I’ve been thinking we probably need nukes for almost a year now.
It isn’t the strikes against Iran, it’s the open threats of annexation.
Who even cares anymore. There’s nothing that can feasibly done to stop him before midterms. He will lose interest in war within two weeks regardless. It’s just another atrocity on a long line of atrocities that we are powerless to stop. It’s just white noise at this point.
Kim Jong Un is probably sending “I told you so” telegrams to every warlord and dictator on the planet.
And why wouldn’t they? The US has shown it’s no different than Russia now. Imperialist warmongers. Might makes right. And the only people who don’t get fucked with by the big three powers are those with nuclear weapons. Why exactly would any country that values their sovereignty NOT be getting into nukes… notice nobody fucks with North Korea? Can’t have a fair fight after all. Same is true for France or the UK. You can’t steal from them without starting a nuclear issue.
All this just to hide THE crime
Trump is only capable of making everything he touches worse. I’m forever baffled people support this lunatic.
Assassinating foreign leaders and public figures is also apparently now an accepted form of foreign policy, as well, even when you’re negotiating under a flag of truce.
Yeah, real safe time to be a diplomat…
Agree. MAGA can go to the front of the line for fighting whatever war comes from this. Trump is their man…
Blood is not only on his hands but the people who in power who backed him and they are also responsible for all of this happening because they allow it to happen instead of impeaching him and sending him to prison.
This could have been prevented, but they did NOTHING!
yep the whole nuclear club membership does seem to be the only reliable bouncer at the sovereignty nightclub these days
Iraq: potentially developing WMDs. Invaded.
Iran: Likely pursuing nuclear weapons technology. Invaded.
North Korea: has developed nuclear weapons and has been saber rattling for decades. Eh, we can let them just hang out.
I mean, ya. It’s the new meta. North Korea proved it works and Iran proves what happens without it.
The thing that gets me is he’s also explicitly made it okay to kill foreign heads of state. That’s a line nations aren’t willing to cross because of the precedent it sets. All of Trump’s international travel and the time he spends at Mar-A-Lago has become much more dangerous, as Iran’s extremist elements now have an excuse to retaliate in a similar fashion.
I have always been very anti-nuclear weapons, but arguably he’s made the world a lot more safe (from him by showing them they need nukes unless they want to be invaded at will)
