In Cologne some alternative bars have taken over old pubs with Kegelbahnen. They typically keep them in that slightly stuffy condition which is great.

My friends and I stopped for a beer at a sleepy small-town bar/restaurant. We were the only people in there besides the owner, a nice elderly lady. We commented on some pictures on the wall showing old Prussian Kegelbahn league champions. The lady says there’s a Kegelbahn in the back, and asks if we want to see it. Of course we do! She takes us in back through a dusty hallway to the alley, turns the lights on, goes to an electrical panel and fires up the Kegelbahn, obviously for the first time in years. She tells us to have fun and leaves us. We bowled for a long time and she came back with beers a few times. When we were done she turned everything off, locked it up and we said goodbye. One of the funnest and most random things that has ever happened to me while traveling.
