I mean, yeah that’s kinda obvious. The preferred leader is not yet in Iran, so if Khamenei were killed, someone would take over the levers of power. Who would that be? The people closest to them and most knowledgeable about how to pull them.
I’m still puzzled by what their war goal is. They want to „topple the regime“, then what?
I honestly don’t know how anyone could expect this ends any other way. People seem to think if we drop enough bombs, whoever fills the power vacuum will suddenly love freedom and Democracy. Every time we do this there are people who think that’s how it will go. I’ll never understand it.
Even if they killed Khamenei, there are thousands of Ayatollahs in Iran and dozens of „Grand Ayatollahs“ ready to step in and take over. Hoping an unarmed, unorganized and fragmented Iranian civilian uprising could fight and beat the heavily armed and organized Iranian Armed Forces is wishful thinking at best.

He would love for a hardline dictatorship that is “aligned” with him. Meaning invests in his crypto schemes, buys him luxury planes and gives him various business permits and deals.
They have 10,000 Clerics waiting in the wings. If we’re hoping to bomb our way clear of the ‘Death to America’ ideology, we’re going to be here a long time.
The clerics did an incredible job purging all potential rivals. It’s why Iranian protests haven’t led anywhere. There’s no leaders left for a resistance.

While watching this shitshow unfold, it is important to bear in mind that Jeff Epstein didn’t kill himself.
Of course, none of the people dead this weekend killed themselves either. They’ve all died in the name of a pair of would-be dictators who’re acting out of their own sense of self-preservation.
Every dictatorship tries to sell this line. It’s never worth it to hold onto a monster for fear of the next one. In the rare occasion where one monster replaces another, we still benefit from a decade or two of peace while the replacement monster consolidates power.
There are many reasons not to go to war, but saving the ayatollah isn’t one of them.
