This is likely motivated more by domestic political concerns, Carney probably wants to curry favor with Canadian citizens of Iranian descent who hate the regime

I don’t have enough information to form an opinion on this at the current time. I’m not in support or against this until I can figure out what is actually going on. I urge anyone who is already steadfast in their beliefs already to take a minute and figure out why they have their stance instead of kneejerk reactions.
On the surface, I don’t like this but I don’t have enough information to say exactly why I don’t like this.

I think some people are reading too much into Carney’s statement.
Is it the USA’s fault that Iran restarted their nuclear program? Absolutely.
Things being how they are, has explosive diplomacy become the only way forward? Possibly.
Accepting that reducing Iranian potential to obtain nuclear weapons isn’t really related to “how we got here”, it’s just where we are.
Unfortunately.

Iran has murdered tens of thousands of its own people over the past few months. My Iranian friends have all been talking about it.
War is bad and I don’t know how this is going to play out. But if the regime topples and legit liberal democracy is allowed to gain foothold here then that would be a net benefit to the people.

Life’s a shit sandwich.
Bombing people costs money and lives.
Still, a government that spends 47 years saying your neighbor is the great satan and must be destroyed so the 12th imam can establish a world caliphate can’t be allowed to build nuclear weapons.
Bombing sucks, but nukes in freight containers detonating in US and European ports will suck worse.
One thing I actually agree on, fuck the Ayatollah.
I know innocent people will die, and it will be tragic. But this is their chance to be free, and freedom always has a price.
Of course we know Trump is doing this for Israel, but if liberating the Iranian people is an unintended consequence, that’s good enough for me.

His actual official statement is way more nuanced than what the paywall mentions. It’s about 5 or 6 paragraphs and the vast majority of it are valid statements. Iran is an illiberal, totalitarian regime that promotes terrorism and is an unstable actor in the Middle East. And the less power they have the better it is for Iranians and other Middle East citizens. He also mentioned how innocent human lives need to be preserved and protected.
The nuanced part is where Carney mentions that Canada stands with the U.S to denuclearize Iran and stop them from having nuclear weapons and liberate Iranians from a bad regime. On the surface this is the correct statement. Iran shouldn’t have nukes (I’m of the opinion that Israel shouldn’t have nukes either) and Iranians should be freed from an authoritarian regime. But reading deeper into it, does that mean the Carney supports whatever the U.S is about to do? Buddy up with Israel to attack Iran which will actually lead to a lot of civilian deaths as it always does? He doesn’t directly mention it, but you can make the case that maybe he does.

Carney’s statements of support only relate to disabling dismantling the nuclear weapons program.
Not a fan. I would have preferred silence or de-escalation language.
Of course I don’t support a brutal theocratic regime. So, my position isn’t one of just blind anti-Americanism. Iran’s regime is dangerous.
My position is that the United States is destabilizing global peace in a very real way. No nation should be responsible for global stability or should be responsible for the removal of dictatorships.
The intent to control Iran here, is no different than the intent the US uses to control Europe and Canada. It’s all in service of preserving its power.
Iran is a key strategic partner for China and Russia. It’ll be interesting to see how they respond and if they potentially provide support to Iran the same way Europe provides support to Ukraine. There has even been reporting on China providing arms.
I really would have preferred Canada had chosen neutrality.
