    >Cries and shouts could be heard inside an Edmonton courtroom after Ashley Rattlesnake, 30, was told she would serve three years and nine months in prison for the death of eight-year-old Nina Napope Dumais.

    >Rattlesnake was initially handed an eight-year-sentence, but she was given credit for time served, and it was further reduced because of her guilty plea. The justice said he considered the Edmonton Police Service’s conduct to be a mitigating factor.

If you’re FN, Gladue giveth and Gladue taketh away. And if anyone is wondering why AB wants more say in choosing their judges…

  2. >A medical examiner determined that Nina had suffered numerous injuries — some recent, some months-old — consistent with chronic child abuse, the agreed statement of facts reads.

    >She was also suffering from sepsis affecting her entire body, likely caused by an untreated broken tooth.

    >The blunt-force head injury she suffered on April 22 was identified as the final injury that led to her death. The medical examiner concluded she may have survived that injury if not for her prior abuse and infection.

She tortured this child for an extended period of time.

Three years and change for chronic child abuse, eventual death under her care, and attempt to dispose of the body.

I wonder if the incident actually occurred as they described. Putting a head through a wall is no easy feat for a small child, without taking a run at it. But an adult could easily put a child’s head through a wall.

    >Gladue principles are a legal requirement for courts to consider the background of Indigenous offenders and alternatives to prison in sentencing.

Because it totally makes sense to go easy on an Indigenous woman who abused and killed an Indigenous child

That will totally fix intergenerational trauma guys

Wait… so if you’re indigenous you don’t adhere to our laws and sentencing ?

Institutionalized racism is a real thing. The courts clearly don’t care about violence towards indigenous kids and are happy slapping the wrist of a junkie child murdered simply based on her ethnicity. What a shame and I hope this soulless judge can’t sleep at night.

  6. Canadian courts move at a glacial pace and our judges are dipshits, same as ever.

  7. So the couple that made money selling videos of animals being crushed to death got 15 years and this POS gets less than 4 years.

    What a disappointment.

  8. Next weeks headline: “Those perpetrating crimes against aboriginals punished less harshly tribe leaders say”

  9. Ah yes, sentences based on race. Totally encompasses equal rights for all.

Canadian justice system… What a joke.

What’s wrong with just having one set of rules and laws for everyone? Is that not okay? Also why would the first through be to grab a hockey bad and dispose of the body without even seeking help. Fuck is wrong with these people

This is an absolutely outrageous sentence for extended child abuse causing eventual death. Even the 8 year she would have initially gotten is WAY too light.

She should be imprisoned for the rest of her natural life with ZERO possibility of parole.

How can anybody involved in this system even sleep at night??

I’m tired of having codified racism in my country and it’s not even like it helps the communities that are supposed to benefit. The only winners are criminals who are free to return to terrorize the exact communities these laws are claiming to help
