Not surprising. A significant portion of Mexico, including their government, is on the cartel’s payroll anyway.
Avoid with a ten foot pole. Particularly there is zero reason to go to this cartel invested place for vacation.

As powerful as cartels have been, I feel like they were still manageable. But as time progresses, more US weaponry in their hands, drones becoming so much more of a across the board threat. Pretty much what advantage they had has significantly diminished. So now if try to assert control, a lot more lives will be lost.
This is unfortunately what happens when trying to legitimatize the groups and leave them alone. Playing a game of trying to coddle them with kindness. That’s why even during leaked calls, could hear how much authority they expect and believe to have. It is like keeping a tiger in the home and expecting it to stay peacefully on one side of the house. Shouldn’t be shocked if it suddenly attacks.

The Narco trade is practically an institution that is fueled by the ravenous desire for drugs all over the world, but particularly in their neighbor, the US.
I can’t imagine directly fighting this in any meaningful way that doesn’t include reducing the desire for drugs all over the world.
That means improving conditions and happiness in places where drug use is high and how drugs are an escape from that lived-reality, especially when the narco industry is the 4th largest employer in Mexico.

They’ve lost that battle long ago.

At this rate it will get to the point where they need direct US intervention

I would bet money that the mexican president is being paid by another cartel to fight against the new gen ones. Seems weird to target them specifically, and we already know she has ties to cartels.
