  1. Québec is theoretically majority Catholic, but in practice very secular. Most Québécois today are irreligious.

Is this „percentage of Christians“ or „religious“ who are Catholic? I cannot for a second believe 40% of all Nevada and California residents are Catholic.

As a Catholic who moved to Alabama for awhile I felt this firsthand lol, I’m not even really a hardcore practicing catholic I typically just say I’m Catholic to get out of evangelical shit or to cut religious preachy conversations short but damn did it seem to hit hard in Alabama.

Lot of sideways looks, I also say “pop” and just generally am aggressively midwestern lol.

Canada: We believe in separation of church and state, unlike our evil neighbours to the south.

Also Canada: We have fully government/taxpayer funded Catholic schools.

This shows the percentage who are Catholic by state, not the percentage of Catholics who live in North America.

When my mom got moved to Georgia for work in the early 80s, her company warned her to not let anyone down there know that she was Catholic. She was in sales, based out of Savannah, and her route took her through a lot of small towns in rural Georgia. She had graduated from a Catholic university with an obviously Catholic name, so she was also told to straight up lie about where she went to college if anyone asked. She accidentally mentioned the college once to some people without mentioning that she had gone there, and that started a whole conversation about Catholics… and that’s how she learned Catholics were still on the KKK’s list in the 80s, at least in some places. those stories have always been wild to me, but I guess they sort of maw *a little* more sense when I see this map.
