      >Canada may have to accept a baseline tariff as the “price” to pay to continue shipping goods into the United States, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne acknowledged Wednesday after President [Donald Trump](https://www.thestar.com/news/donald-trump/) said he wants tariffs to replace income taxes as the main generator of government revenue.

      >“I think it is pretty well understood now in the world that the view of the American administration is that there’ll be a price to access the American market,” said Champagne when asked if Trump’s State of the Union address bodes badly for Canada’s hopes to get tariffs lifted.

They’re starting to let us down easy.

    2. Then fuck the American market. Glad we have Carney who’s set on diversifying things.

Like everyone else has had to do with the US, so will we. All the while the rest of us continue to diversify behind the scene and ultimately leave the US market for good.

    4. It’s ok, they don’t need anything from us anyway. Export tax on potash maybe?

    5. It is what it is, but in a twisted way I’m excited by the thought of Canada pivoting and what may come of it. Let’s f’n go.

The end result of this will be higher prices for American consumers. Yes, more jobs may return to the US at the expense of Canada and other US trading partners, but the cost of production will be higher (thus the whole reason for importing products in the first place) which will be passed on to consumers. All so billionaires in the US can pay less taxes than they already ~~do~~ don’t.

I think it’s a fair expectation to set. I’m not sure there is a way to negotiate with the US on this one. Even if there were, the deal would be just a news cycle away from being broken for more concessions.

It’s how we react to this reality is what’s important. Limit the damage and agree to as little as possible with the US while investing as much as possible into new deals that specifically exclude the US. It’s still going to suck and take time, but our focus needs to be on the new deals not trying to make sense or change what the US is doing.

    8. I kind of wish we just dont make a deal then. Like honestly, trumps word holds no trust. I’d rather proudly stick my finger up in the sky. Then block uranium and potash and oil to them.

Trump and his syncophants want to take away automotive manufacturing from Canada. Ok so maybe we just won’t buy their cars. They can’t have it all their way. Don’t expect to sell your products here if you treat us so shabbily.

    10. There will be a price? That’s fine. We’ll just spend our money elsewhere. Get fucked, America.

    11. aeppelcyning on

As long as they pay a price. Baseline tariffs should mean reduced or reciprocal market access.

    12. Creative_gal_3153 on

We all knew this was the case. That’s why we should wait it out until a new administration takes over sans Trump. And in the process, we’re moving away from the US as much as possible but all these things take time. Let’s not forget, US is tariffing every country, not just Canada.

    13. Ok_Manufacturer_5323 on

This is only for the next 3 years max, it’s not as if Americans ever asked for or wanted tariffs on Canada. By the time we even get trade ramped up by other countries it’ll be time to reestablish relations with the US

    14. Destroinretirement on

So what. They what a GST level tax on themselves? Fine. Sign up to it and move on.

    15. bmudtiddersdom-42069 on

Everyone says Americans are paying the tariffs. So what’s the big deal?

    16. Wind_Best_1440 on

We should be doing massive country spanning projects to not only enlarge our ports in Canada, but we should be doing massive new port constructions on both sides of the country, and even in Winnipeg.

Like this should be top priority, with large government contracts. And then offer lower taxes for an entire generation for new towns/cities around these new ports to attract investment. Something like 1/4th Taxes for those living and working there for 25 years. Lock it in long term so people can plan around it.

      Is everyone listening?

      ***FUCK THE US!***

      ***Fuck Trump***

      ***Fuck his supporters***

***Fuck everything and everyone „pro USA“***

Look to trade with every other country on the planet. Diversify; our reliance on the States post war has come back to bite us.

    19. When it comes to auto sector. Don’t we just need to follow the routes used for stolen vehicle exports? Are those foreign buyers are only interested in used/stolen vehicles?

    20. NormalBill76 on

Now that we’ve all come to the same conclusion, we should go full scorched earth and stop exporting oil and potash to them. I’d rather starve from a lack of supply managed diary than give any concessions!

    21. 9 months to mid terms. Let’s see how this goes. Because if it’s catastrophic for Republicans and Agent Orange keeps it up, in less than 3 years none of this may matter.

There’s zero harm in waiting him out. Even if they pull out of CUSMA the next group can undo that in a few years and CUSMA would still be running out the clock then.

The U.S. has 34 trillion dollars worth of debt and a growing deficit. Even if Democrats take back the house and senate, business as usual may never come back. Unless they raise income taxes these tariffs are generating revenue their country desperately needs. The good news is they can’t readily replace all our exports onshore, but we do need to expand our trade exports and fast.

    23. Adventurous-Hand3942 on

Hopefully we build great connections with the whole world, then Democrats win back USA, USA goes back to slightly normal and Canada is booming everywhere.

    24. Columbia_Guy001 on

I hate that phrasing, „a price to access the American Market“. Just propagates the notion that it is anyone but Americans paying the tariffs.

    25. Canada needs to understand that America is a enemy nation and should be viewed as such

    26. Calgaryrox75 on

i know this is going to be hard to pivot from but is anyone else sick of the “ when the US sneezes , canada catches a cold” philosophy that we’ve been hearing and suffering from for almost 100 years? this has been a long time coming but our country will be way better off not tying itself to only 1 other economy in the world. let’s get back to gold as the main reserve and let’s see how this plays out. i’m sick of being only known “ americas friendly neighbours “ . it’s time for Canada to be recognized as an independent economic nation who’s sole goal is prosperity with multiple nations when it comes to trade, technology, and global security.
