Colbert not wrong. Sitting there looking stern while he lies for two hours is basically a participation trophy.
Colbert is on point with his retorts lately.
He should have sat in the front row wearing a t-shirt with Trump and Epstein on it.
I’m guessing Trump has something on him, potentially handed to him by Musk and relating to his social media private messages.
We’re not allowed to talk about how criminally negligent our elected reps of the capital “D” flavor have been on Reddit (Reddit is still unaware of citizens united and the systems already in place that got us to this embarrassing point to begin with, so naturally; we’re still only allowed to blame everything on republicans) so it’s always nice when someone who these idiots actually listens to is able to say it out loud on network tv.
When I say this and I’m accused of supporting fascism and attacking democrats.
Colbert is spot on.
Participating gives the circus an air of legitimacy that it does not deserve.
Democrats need to realize that trying to look like the smartest guy in the room actually makes you look weak. No one respects weakness.
However, shrillness is also a bad look.
The goal should be to project strength while attacking the other side for being failed and incompetent. Playing stoic won’t get you there.
Jeffries needs to get some balls or take some stimulants.
IDK Why democratic approval ratings are so low. Their leaders make it clear they intend to **do nothing**. Chuck Schumer doesnt care if the masked police are shooting you at home; so long as Israel has funding for free healthcare nothing will change.
Fun fact not many people know: Jack Squat is actually Scott Free’s 2nd cousin on his mom’s side.
The party needs new leaders. Jeffries and Schumer are just puppets of big corporations.
The back-to-brunch libs are starting to wake up.
I got auto deleted for my last post so I need to add some nonsense to pass adhere to the rules. My original post:
MLK: “Shhh.”
Bullseye
I think its fun to ask „What would controlled opposition do differently?“ and jf the answer is nothing, i assume they are
He needs a sign “People of color aren’t apes”. Good trouble!
I’m surprised he didn’t have pearls to clutch
We live in a defacto fascist dictatorship. The President is defying the courts, the courts and congress have allowed him to violate the constitution, and he has built a private army that is murdering people in the streets without consequences. Attending his speeches is tacit approval of fascism. The canary in the coal mine is dead, the Dem establishment refuses to acknowledge it, and instead pay lip service in sternly worded statements.
Jeffries is caucus leader. In a caucus meeting, there was a discussion on what Democrats should during SOU. They could attend and demonstrate. They could not go and hold a rally of their own. Like any herd of cats, they couldnt agree. So, Jeffries told them to do what be e wanted. Jeffries, who will probably be Speaker next year, decided to act like one. Sorry if it doesnt meet your expectations
Man, I just feel bad for Hakeem Jeffries. He just doesn’t seem to know how to do anything that excites the Democratic voters. Every time he steps up to bat, it’s always a bunt and no one is even on base.
Maybe it’s just an indictment of the Democratic persona in general. We are a voting block that fancies itself intellectual, loves to debate in nuance, and can never rally behind anything unless it hits the right vibe and checks all the boxes. Whereas MAGA will sit there and applaud with roars of approval as Donald Trump deep throats a microphone on stage, we will quietly quibble and twist our mouths if any of our leaders makes a weird laugh, pauses too long to answer, etc.
I am in no way saying we are wrong. I just wonder if we are an old army with old generals and old tactics suddenly faced with a wildly new foe conducting new warfare. Ironic given the MAGA base would be the ’new‘, but they seem to have tapped some atomic concoction of stupidity, allegiance, grudge, and nationalism that we struggle to counter even as it flaunts its own corruption in our very faces.
Republican vs Democrat = Oligarchs vs Corporatists and it shows.
Hang on, during Obama’s day wasn’t it unheard of for Justice Alito to shake his head and mouth „not true“ when Obama criticized Citizens United?
Acting insane is what MAGA does, State of the Union isn’t some new thing Trump put together to make himself look good. Democrats should still have some decorum.
What the Democratic Party needs is a Mitch McConnell-type fighter, but one who, you know, doesn’t do Mitch McConnell things. Instead they have Chuck Schumer.
Jeffries and Schumer have literally had their spines surgically removed
If Dems retake the House it *cannot* be Jeffries who gets the gavel. Dude has negative sauce and commands zero respect. Needs to be a fighter like Raskin or Jayapal.
Shouldn’t have shown up. Nothing gained from giving it his attention. Only much-deserved criticism. Disappointing that he couldn’t meet the moment and be the leader of the resistance.
Jeffries two options were: a) not to show up or b) to sit quietly. Anyone acting like they expect the house minority leader to get into an argument with the president during the SOTU is an idiot, Colbert included.
Another Murc’s Law complaint towards Dems.
They’re ineffective Because THE VOTERS put Democrats in that position.
Voters screeching at Democrats to „do something“ ring absolutely empty, when the very same Voters kicked Democrats out of power last year because of some war elsewhere.
Every Democrat was warning about dangers of Trump 2.0, and people just ignored the Democrats and allowed the „earn my vote“ mindset to fester.
We must not forget the REAL solution:
To strengthen the Democrats, vote for more Democrats in government, regardless of other concerns.
It’s time to go low and actually start participating in the Democratic party, supporting and voting for more Democrats, 100% of the time, so they can retake Congress & the Presidency.
hey, remember summer 2024 when Dems started calling the GOP “weird” and laughing at their insane lies, and it rallied a whole bunch of people and things felt good for the first time in a decade, then they just…stopped?
we finally had these fascists on the back foot and then someone at the DNCC said we should dial back the “weird” talk, harris spent an entire debate just saying “boy, talk about extreme,” and here we are.
That’s the same as doing nothing.
At least wear a shirt
Something
I hope he gets voted out
You want to make it comfortable for the child rapist?
God the Democrats got some very weak people in office or you know co-conspirators
The opposing party never claps at the SOTU. Jeffries did nothing but wanted to take a victory lap for it.
Like Trump ever had a problem with a black man shutting up.
Democrats aren’t there to oppose anything. They are there to insider trade.
Jeffries is completely out of touch and needs to go.
It’s the Jill Stein tactic. Do nothing and help no one by doing nothing. Pretend to care about Palestinians.
Why shouldn’t others use similar tactics? Oh right Democrats are held to a standard while other parties are not.
Criticizing the house minority for doing nothing is stupid. They have very little power to do anything.
Ive been told the left never criticizes their own and only focus on Trump.
I think Jeffries is performative and lacks any authenticity at all.
It tilts me to death that Republicans will literally lie to defend their people, while we will search for any excuse to attack our people.
I don’t know, man.
Do any of us really think that he supports Trump or Trump’s (Stephen Miller’s) agenda?
I agree with the people who boycotted. I also agree with the people who stayed and heckled. I ALSO agree with the people who — like Jeffries — chose to stay and treat the SOU with the decorum that it once deserved and may yet again.
None of us know what to do here. (And if you say you do: I say you’re full of shit.) A third of this country put him in office while another third stood by and watched it happen. How do we come back from that? I’m not saying that we can’t, but there is no roadmap, so I’m not going to get mad at anybody for doing what feels right to them.
We need Jeffries. We need Al Green. We need Omar. We may not need Schumer, but I don’t really know.
What I DO know is that Stephen Miller loves that Progressives are eating their own on Late Night TV.
The democrats really want Hakeem to be the next Obama. It’s just not going to happen. No charisma. No balls.
Dem leadership is what’s holding this party back, there probably hasn’t been a better time for opposition at midterms, the leadership has got to be refreshed and evolve.
>Stephen Colbert lashed out at top Democrat Hakeem Jeffries for [urging his party to have a “silent” protest ](https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/us-politics/state-of-the-union-protests-democrats-trump-b2926721.html)and avoid disrupting the [State of the Union address,](https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-state-of-the-union-speech-latest-updates-sotu-epstein-b2927136.html) calling the move “a bold rebrand of doing jack squat.”
>[*The Late Show* host ](https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/us-politics/stephen-colbert-texas-democratic-senate-primary-b2923128.html)mocked the House minority leader’s encouragement for Democrats to either attend President Donald Trump’s address Tuesday night “in silent defiance” or to go to a counter event, but not to bail entirely or “make a scene” if they did attend.
>“We’re not going to Donald Trump’s house,” Jeffries [said last week.](https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/us-politics/state-of-the-union-protests-democrats-trump-b2926721.html) “He’s coming to our house. It’s my view that you don’t let anyone, ever, run you off of your block.”
>Dozens of Democratic lawmakers heeded his advice, staging walkouts or holding up signs in protest of Trump’s agenda.
>“For Democrats who did attend, Hakeem Jeffries urged members not to make a scene,” [Colbert said](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vyFiSJn5Qs&t=171s). “An approach he dubbed ‘silent defiance, which I believe is a bold rebrand of doing jack squat.”
>Colbert added, “As Martin Luther King once said, ‘Shhh.’” He then displayed the made-up quote and an image of the civil rights leader on the screen.
>Many Democrats did protest both in and outside of the chamber throughout the State of the Union.
>To kick off the address, Rep. Al Green, a Democrat from Texas, held up a sign that read, “Black people aren’t apes,” in reference to the video [Trump shared online that portrayed Barack and Michelle Obama as apes](https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-obama-video-truth-social-barack-michelle-b2915822.html). Trump claimed an “aide” had posted the video but refused to apologize.
>Green was swiftly escorted out of the building, making it the second time he has been removed during one of Trump’s addresses.
>Other Democrats to protest the event include Rep. Ilhan Omar, of Minnesota, who cried out, “You have killed two Americans!” as Trump boasted about his immigration crackdown. Norma Torres, a Democrat from California, could also be seen holding up photos of Renee Nicole Good and Alex Pretti, the two U.S. citizens who were killed by immigration enforcement officers in Minneapolis last month.
>Some who skipped the speech addressed hundreds of protesters gathered on the National Mall during a counter-event billed as the “People’s State of the Union.”
>Throughout his speech, Trump criticized Democratic lawmakers for refusing to stand or clap for him, at one point telling them, “You should be ashamed of yourself.”
>“These people are crazy. I’m telling you, they’re crazy,” Trump said as Democrats remained seated, prompting more thunderous applause from the Republican side of the chamber.
>“We’re lucky to have a country with people like this,” he then said, referring to the Republicans. “Democrats are destroying our country.”
>Last year it was announced that Colbert’s program, *The Late Show* with Stephen Colbert, will end in May 2026.
>CBS, which airs the show, has claimed the move to end the popular late-night installment said the decision was [motivated by a “financial decision.”](https://www.the-independent.com/arts-entertainment/tv/news/stephen-colbert-samantha-bee-cancellation-b2798580.html)
>However, there has been [speculation that the cancellation was a move to appease Trump](https://www.the-independent.com/arts-entertainment/tv/news/stephen-colbert-elsbeth-cbs-late-show-cancelled-b2801359.html), as Paramount, which owns CBS, needed the presidentially controlled Federal Communications Commission to approve its $8 billion sale to Skydance.
>Colbert has long been an outspoken critic of Trump. And his show’s cancellation came shortly after he spoke out about Paramount’s decision to pay a $16 million settlement to Trump over another CBS show, *60 Minutes*, calling it a “big fat bribe.”
>Trump reveled in Colbert’s firing, writing on his Truth Social platform at the time it was announced, “I absolutely love that Colbert was fired.”
>In response, Colbert declared that the “gloves are off.”
Jefferies is such a weak leader.
This is why I never cared for his filibuster stunt.
It literally did nothing but look like a campaign stunt and a pat on his own back.
Slacktivism is going to be the death of our country.
No matter what, putting a clippy in your profile pic or showing up to a one-day protest that’s advertised weeks in advance with no follow-up ain’t gonna change jack shit.
Standing in defiance just adds another layer to the „Do nothing and give yourself a pat on the back“ slacktivist mindset.
When I say slacktivism will be the death of the country, I don’t mean it will cause the failure. MAGA and extreme right ideology will be the killer, but with no rebuke from the opposition outside of slacktivism they’re just free to come on in and takeover.
A year ago, Jeffries said he doesn’t have to swing at every pitch. One year later, the American people are still waiting for him to get out of the dugout.
Don’t be mad at him, he did what he was told by his AIPAC handlers.
AIPEC getting their money’s worth. Everyone that takes AIPEC money should be primaried
I sure had higher hopes and expectations when Jeffries was elected to the post. Been too quiet and often invisible. Am truly curious as to his own take regarding his leadership.
The Democrats need to stop playing “nice.” They’ve done that for too long and look where we are at.
