Conservatives will take political advice from an American strategist about how to win as a conservative in rural Oklahoma, and then blame the voters here for not being swept off their feet.
They’ll never listen to a moderate middle class suburban Canadian tell them the voters just want the CPC to behave like reasonable adults again instead of them acting like Trump is someone to emulate.
Gee, who could have possibly predicted that the overwhelming majority of Canadians would take egregious issue with the CPC saying that Trump „loves us“ and that it’s Canadians‘ fault that this trade situation is occurring. I mean, come on, surely no one could have predicted? Actually, no, LITERALLY ANYONE WITH MORE THAN TWO BRAINCELLS COULD HAVE PREDICTED IT!
Any chance that Jivani ever wanted to run as PM is gone because that hissy-fit comment is going to follow him for the entirety of his political career.
I think Pierre has demonstrated that he is a particularly weak leader starting before Trudeau left. Still, this Jivani thing is the gift that keeps on giving to the LPC – the message seems to be that Poillievre does not have control of his caucus and this story remains a massive vulnerability.

I acknowledge that result and point out *he still led the party to defeat* – makes it somehow worse.
If the Conservatives would realize that lying and telling half truths is damaging their brand as well, that would be super.
Or, as a treat for them to suggest motions in Parliament that are more than just things that are either a) already being worked on, or 2) proposing things to be illegal that already are, that would also be fantastic.
Canadians are smarter than the Conservatives would have them believe.
Anybody who’s followed Jivani’s career path knows this was always going to end with him being kicked out of caucus, it’s just a question of how long it takes the CPC to figure that out. He’s not a team player, and his strategy at the moment seems to be undermining Poilievre and soft launching his own leadership bid.
Jivani doesn’t come across as a stupid person to me, so I don’t know how it didn’t occur to him that he was used as a prop by the Trump admin
He must have known full well that the Trump admin would use him to show how uncooperative the Liberals were being and he still went along with it
Unless he really believed that a man of Rubio’s rank would take time out of the day for good faith discussions with a nobody from an opposition party from Canada
And then to go on Brietbart, the same further-right-than-Fox Brietbart with strong connections to Steve Bannon who has been openly lusting after Alberta, to bash Canada
„Peddling to the bigot, the intolerant, the conspirationist, and other crazies because the message, the values, and the agenda only appeal to a small portion of the population, so remaining sane was not an option anymore“ is what killed the Conservative brand.
Can you imagine if an MP did any of this during Harper’s reign? Harper would have had him drummed out by evening.
Everything else be damned. MP’s did not act out of turn while he was leader.
The issue for the conservative is that an important part of their base is supportive of Trump while the majority of the Canadian population have totally opposite feelings. There is no winning position for them.
However, I think Jivani was given way too much freeway from PP for his trip and post-trip, which has lead to the current mess. Perhaps it is a sign that PP doesn’t really countrol his caucus anymore.
I have said for years that Erin O’Toole was the last hope of a Conservative leader who could appeal to mainstream Canadians. If the Conservatives ever got rid of Poilievre, it would be with someone further from the mainstream. Peter MacKay or Jean Charest…no chance at all. Even a more conservative choice like Jason Kenney is basically a no go at this point (see his eviction from his own party a few years ago when he realized „the inmates are taking over the asylum).
Yes, Jivani’s comments upset a lot of mainstream Canadian voters but I’m not sure if they realize just how far gone the Conservative Party currently is.
He has set himself up with the base as the successor to Poilievre. Electability? Given that Poilievre lost the election. lost his seat, trails the PM badly and continues to bleed MPs, that should tell you all you need to know about how much Conservative Party members care about that.
