For him not to surrender in that situation, out in the open versus multiple men aiming at you from a tree line, must mean he had some serious propaganda about what would happen to him in captivity.
The Russian soldier made a terminal wrong choice by attempting resistance while being fully exposed out in the open held at gunpoint and being outnumbered.
TL/DR: Russian military is a death cult.

That was so stupid. He had a weapon in his hands, an undeniably fair target, but instead of letting him become aware of his presence while turning him into Swiss cheese, the Ukrainian gave him a chance to choose life.

This is a war crime. Outlawed by the Geneva Conventions Article 37 section 1. If they were to survive, they would serve jail time.
