Lines I remember from my childhood „No snakes are poisonous, they are all edible: some snakes are venomous.“

Why is France colored in red? Is it because of overseas territories?

  3. I assume France is fucked because of French-Guiana?
But if that’s the case, are the spanish regions in north africa included for Spain? Aruba for Netherlands? British overseas territories for Great Britain?
..or is it a much more simple fact that the french people themselves are venomous animals?

Dang AZ! Is it because of the scorpions? I woulda figured Louisiana would have more.

  5. Apparently colder regions have way less and i’m sure it’s near 0 for Alaska and less than 10 for France without overseas territories.

Vietnam is kind of a surprise with over 50 for such a small country. And i expected more for Madagascar but maybe the data is lacking for some countries.

australia has only over 50 venomous animals??? and i thought they had like millions /s

  7. I live in a place in Canada with both rattlesnakes and black widow spiders.

We have an ambulance that’s kitted with anti-venom storage in the event of a rattlesnake bite.

  8. Ngl I can’t imagine moving to a place that is not green on this map. Doesn’t help that I’m already in a green country, but yeah, no thanks.

I think I saw somewhere that the higher number of venomous species doesn’t necessarily translate to higher proportion of venomous species. It could be that proportion of venomous species is pretty much on par everywhere on the planet and some countires simply have more number of total species venomous or otherwise.

  10. In the US we see a clear pattern with latitude. I think there is probably such a pattern globally too, but it’s hard to see because of the size of some countries.

(russia is just *huge*, so it’s reasonable that it has more just for that reason, and australia/argentina are just tall, they both cover over 30 degrees of latitude)

  11. * I grew up in the UK
    * I’m raising kids in Australia

It’s a **WILD** difference in childhoods.

    * **There**, completely innocent, no care, no awareness „*ooh this grass heap has a snake, how cute*“
    * **Here**, take a *step* outside the door and it’s quiet, but persistent, awareness of every bush, every corner, every flower-pot lip, every trash-can, every rock.

  12. I would think venomous animals per km^2 or something would be a lot more useful. 50 slightly different species of hyper rare spider puts you in black but you won’t ever see one, meanwhile if there are 600,000 venomous highly aggressive snakes per km^2 but they are all the same species and that’s the only venomous animal in your country it would be green but a daily nightmare.
