Because every comment seems to be in shock about his plea of not guilty, I will say that this is his initial plea. 99% of all Felony cases start with a plea of „Not guilty.“
Why? Because his attorney needs time to review all the discovery. With a murder case, even if it appears on the outside to be an open and shut case, contains a shit load of discovery. If a plea deal is going to be worked out, they will need time to work that out. Pleading Not Guilty doesn’t mean he won’t change that later. The article makes mention of the death penalty, so they may be negotiating to take death off the table for a Life without Parole plea deal. Who knows. These things take time.
Also procedurally, they may be going for an insanity plea. Which in California typically happens After the Preliminary hearing. Which is a probable cause hearing.

This sounds delusional given that he most likely did it, but this is actually standard procedure. You virtually always plead „Not Guilty“ at the arraignment to preserve your rights and buy time for your lawyers to review the case. If he pleaded guilty today, he’d essentially be volunteering for the maximum sentence without any leverage to negotiate a plea deal or argue for an insanity defense later. It’s not a claim of innocence, it’s just a necessary legal placeholder.

This man deserves the harshest punishments allowed in the state he’s being prosecuted in.
He’ll never last a month in jail.

Somehow Conan O’Brien got dragged into this because they were at his famous Christmas Party the night before.
It’s awful all around, but Conan O’Brien is by all accounts a superb human being and an even better boss.
He doesn’t deserve the media attention he’s been getting for this.

Hopefully, for the Reiner Family, the DA will take Death off the table, and Nick will not attempt an NGI.
It is encouraging to see Nick, sitting calmly, responding to questions, seemingly in a lucid state, sans suicide smock. This image of Nick will go a long way to help establish that Nick is absolutely in control of his thoughts and actions, he is fit to aid in his own defense.
The Public Defender assigned to defend Nick is not likely to engage in any funny business with „expert“ witnesses, as those hired guns don’t come cheap, but more importantly, the evidence against Nick is overwhelming.
Nick’s well documented past indicates that he is a master manipulator and faker, he would be wise to NOT insult the collective intelligence of The Judge and Court. Malingering is frowned upon.

Still wondering why Alan Jackson took his case and then withdrew. Celebrity exposure, then no defense money? Or he didn’t want to defend someone he claimed was absolutely not guilty, and decided it was not possible to win?
