    > At present, Indian students make up for a major share of Canada’s international students, especially in provinces such as Ontario, where they represent over 60% of enrolments.

I’m curious why India is over-represented in Canada.

    Thank phuck.

Easily exploitable, will work in poor conditions & live in garbage ones.

Check out Canadian room rental prices- if it’s under $500 it’s usually cause they have 3 or 4 beds to a single bedroom. There have been make shift rooms made out of living rooms as well.
These make for dangerous conditions as it’s not up to fire code. It’s not Canadians choosing these arrangements.

As for work- the vast majority of service workers are from one particular country now. Can you guess what country they’re from?

I’m all for immigration but we don’t need people who are a tool to suppress quality of life for Canadians.

It’s both the businesses mainly of their own people, and the liberal government.

I’m not against immigration. As long as it’s done legally. And once people are in another country, please leave your home country’s issues out of the new country. I don’t get people when they leave their home for a better life and protest when things back home go wrong. Immigrants needs to assimilate and adapt

There are so many good immigrants that came here, don’t cause trouble and have assimilated. It might’ve been tough for them but they made the effort. Going to a new country and saying “Death to (country name)!” Is totally unacceptable. I just hope the immigrants that have assimilated are left alone and continue living peacefully

  5. With the prices ever climbing and there being no jobs for our kids already graduating in this country I don’t mind cutting international permits.

Especially if we get to the point of it being free for Canadian Citizens.

We are pushing our own kids to go to trade schools because of a lack of jobs after and space at our universities

I had best buddies in university from Barbados and Belize coming here because they dont have anything comparable. India, China some of these places have a full system of their own so we need to allow some for sure but how many is a tough question.

This program does make a lot of future Canadian Citizens

  6. Only 50%…? Should never have let in that many un-skilled, poorly educated students. We need smart people with graduate / post-graduate level training, which is what we use to get from India pre-2016.

less permits are being issued in general, there is no measure that singled out India, even tho there should be .

Friendly reminder: Many of the study permits allowed universities to use Indian (and other foreign) students as cash cows by charging international student tuition.

This helps mitigate chronic underfunding (and ongoing decreases to funding) in post-secondary institutions across Canada.

Many institutions are now cutting programs because the provinces won’t properly fund universities and colleges. They were relying on foreign students for cash.

Now that cow is dead, and things are grim.

Provinces are responsible for funding education, and they are not funding it properly. It’s a complicated situation (as most things are), but it’s not acceptable to exploit foreign students for money in order to fund public institutions that are the responsibilty of domestic citizens and institutions.

This is Canada so we probably cut the 50% that were really coming to study.

Clearly after cheating at the Olympics, Canada has gone full mask off with their racism too!!!!!1!

It’s a stupid policy. Sure, a lot of fake schools were doing immigration fraud. Those should have been the focus on crack down.

Meanwhile, hundreds of small Canadian town have _good_ schools that were primarily fed by international students have shut down. It was a huge economic driver. The students paid full tuition (not subsidized like we pay) and got cheap rent in small towns. My inlaws ran boarding houses for years as a retirement job. Now they are closing them and selling them off.

Good news. Now what’s the Government of Canada’s plan to make sure the millions whos visa is up this year actually leave?

Indians did the same thing in the u.s.

Come here, study, get a job, hire other Indians.

Other comments are leaning into the details and opinions so I won’t rehash them.

The nutshell is Canada swung hard one way on immigration (loose controls and relatively easy opportunity) post 2021 and now it is swinging hard the other way: not just in respect of tighter controls but also public opinion.

There is a decidedly hostile attitude in many towards immigration and India was viewed as the worst offender by Canadians.

As one can see from the data in an era of new regulation and scrutiny fewer people are applying and only a minority of the applicants are being approved.

In the end fewer from India are applying as pathways for education, temporary and permanent residency are substantially reduced and Indian applicants are aware of this now and so not bothering to apply.

Canada is predicting a net population decline in 2026 and it is entirely possible that decline may be in high 6 figure/low 7 figure as people holding various temporary status hit expiry and have to leave.

Good. Immigration is a growing problem for every prosperous country in the modern age. The repercussions to open border policies are evident for anyone paying attention

The missing context to sensationalize is…. The rate was EXTREMELY high for the past few years. Like insanely high.
