Why the fock is this even a story lol ..

Can we not have a single police officer show enough presence at a library to deter the problem.

    2. Unfortunately it seems to be a pretty common occurrence in library’s across our urban centres. I know when I was living in Peterborough the downtown library had many of the same problems which discouraged a lot of people from going to it.

On one hand I know drug use is a mental health problem and we can’t just arrest every drug user (we certainly don’t have the prison capacity for that) but something has to be done to stop drug use in public spaces like libraries.

I really don’t envy the librarians (and regular library users) who are on the front lines of this.

Saskatoon downtown library closed last year for a few weeks because of the violence and burnout from overdoses.

Not sure what the solution is, but my suspicion is management isn’t being as assertive about the problem as they could (i.e. the culture shouldn’t be „all are welcome“, it should be „if you’re utilizing the library services then you are welcome“).

Grow some balls. Call people out. Have security physically throw them out. Let the community know that certain people aren’t welcome. Profile people if you need to. Take the lawsuit on the chin and defend yourself in the public square.

But we all know librarian/bureaucratic types, and that this will never happen. So closed library it is.

We’re currently building a brand-new library (which is beautiful btw), which I affectionately refer to as the new homeless shelter.
