Neither, I cook with soy oil. But if the olive oil wasn’t expensive, I would honor my Portuguese roots

I’m English but I use olive oil for everything except making a sandwich. It just tastes better.
People try to tell me about smoke-points and calories and I honestly couldn’t give a crap. Olive oil tastes better to me.
Irony: I absolutely detest olives.

What do you mean „per capita“ ? That won’t change the results – it’s just which is consumed more.

Fun Fact: there are some who contend that butter vs olive oil was one of the reasons for the rise of Protestantism. The Catholic Church mandated so many days as “meatless” meant you could not use butter (animal product) for cooking. So olive oil had to be used which meant a boon for Italian and Mediterranean suppliers who often had connections to the Church. That favoritism is cited as a contributing factor to the split with Catholisim.

Belgium: also a generational thing. In 20 years probably olive oil will win.

This doesn’t make sense, when people don’t use olive oil, they mostly use seed oil, almost no one uses butter for frying and cooking anymore, only for special recipes.

It’s a bit misleading, I believe North Italy (Piedmont / Po River Valley) also use butter heavily, at least according to Anthony Bourdain.

It’s so wrong for France. The South uses nearly exclusively olive oil ! That’s what I do !
(Don’t forget : duck fat for the south-west)

Here in Brasil most of us probably use margarine and some other vegetal oil more than both, since it’s more affordable, even if we do like both butter and olive oil we end up using them with more moderation because of the price…

My girlfriend uses mostly butter and I use mostly olive oil ; we’re from Paris. I’m pretty sure most French people (us included) use both depending on what they’re cooking.
