      As global demand for cobalt and copper surged, China secured mining rights in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) through deals with President Kabila. Meanwhile, the US hedge fund Och-Ziff, through an Israeli businessman named Gertler, allegedly bribed Congolese officials for mining access. Gertler, later sanctioned by the US for corruption, praised Kabila publicly while profiting from opaque mining deals in the DRC.
