Global Affairs Canada has updated its travel advisory for the coastal city of Puerto Vallarta and other parts of the Mexican state of Jalisco following a sudden explosion of violence that has seen road blockades with burning vehicles and clashes between federal authorities and armed groups.

The advisory says there is a „shelter in place order“ in Puerto Vallarta and that „all taxi and rideshare services“ are suspended. It advises all Canadians in Jalisco to keep a low profile, monitor media and follow the orders of local authorities.

I’m here right now. We haven’t been officially ordered to shelter in place. The resorts aren’t communicating anything. Started during the Olympic game. Very apocalyptic. Tourists are safe.

Edit: reports that planes are flying out again, but none will come in. So that means the airport must be considered somewhat safe.

    3. Jesus I have a bunch of family down there right now, some of whom were supposed to fly out today. They’re currently in lockdown from what I’ve been able to find out.

The Mexican army killed the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, “El Mencho,” in an operation Sunday, a federal official said.

The official, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said it happened during a military operation in the western state of Jalisco.

It followed several hours of roadblocks with burning vehicles in Jalisco and other states. Such tactics are commonly used by the cartels to block military operations.

Canadians need to take staycations. We have a beautiful country to explore

That’s great news! (Sarcasm) I was already scared to travel there for a wedding in March, but was told it was “safe”.

    7. Was there mid January and had literally zero issues with safety, stay safe everyone there now

    8. Does anyone think this will last more than a few days? I have a friend with a vacation booked to head there soon and she’s had such a rough tine of it lately. She’s really looking forward to it and I hate the thought of her not being able to go. I realize there are worse things.

    9. Was there last month, beautiful part of the world and great people. This is a specific isolated incident.

I’m here now, about 60 k north of PV. The stores are closed the gas stations are closed, we have been told to stay off the beaches. That’s all I know for sure right now

This is why I’m most likely never go back to Mexico. Last time I went the cartels stayed away from some if the tourist areas. But now that I’ve been there twice and now that the cartels are everywhere and other crimes towards tourists have picked up, there’s other places i need to check off my bucket list.

    12. Its probably because the mexican army just killed the leader of Jalisco New Generation Cartel.

    13. Well if the Mexican government takes out a cartel leader there’s gonna be repercussions 🤷

Right now there seems to be some unrest going on. Hopefully it will be settled in a few days.

A known constant risk with Mexico. Sucks, great country with amazing people.
