„Curious“ is not a word that I’d ever associate with trump.

„Puzzled“ or „confused“ might be the more correct term.

  2. They are literally an apocalypse cult. When engaging in diplomatic relations with them, you cannot assume rationality.

  3. When you have the reputation of chickening out of your decisions that’s what happens

  4. Don’t they realize he’s the greatest leader of all time? Just ask his cult.

  5. That’s odd.. he should know better than most why someone would refuse to capitulate, and Iran technically didn’t even lose yet

Which makes me wonder what Trump himself would do in that situation. Would he capitulate and try to save his miserable life or double down because of his megalomaniac narcissism.

  7. Because Trump isn’t unpredictable, he is unreliable. Any deal they make today will just keep him satisfied for a couple of weeks. Then he will be back to threatening. The US has already spent a lot of fuel flying in their strike forces. So Trump is probably reasoning with the „sunk cost fallacy“ in mind and will have to bomb something/somebody to not not look weak/silly/stupid.

When the US’s word can’t be trusted and each administration with the early 80s is sanctioning the shit out of them, been trying for regime change, it’s totally understandable

Because Iran isn’t fucking afraid of the US lol. Political elites in the US answer to global finance and capital. Political elites are also looking to get reelected. No one in the US can afford a forever war in Iran, especially when they could make it as financially untenable as possible. Trump chickening out is as sure of a bet as you can get geopolitically.

  10. Because its the same conversation as those mythical WMDs, except no on believes the USA this time.

Now I *know* thats a lie. Trump has never been curious about anything in his entire life.

1 – because Iran is very proud

2 – because they’re already sanctioned to the hilt and aren’t part of the Americansphere

3 – And probably most importantly, they’re calculating that all he can do is drop bombs. Iran can absorb those, and then what? They can claim victory when America backs down and doesn’t escalate

If any lessons were learned in Iraq and Afghanistan, they are being completely ignored

A country of almost 100 million people can realistically only fall from the inside, which is why it doesn’t make sense for them to capitulate. Given the recent mass protests however, an external attack might tip the scales now and make their regime fall.

  16. Hmm, curious… Maybe we should ask someone with actual experience and education in diplomacy instead of a real estate salesman.

  17. Capitulated to whom/what? Has anyone attacked Iran?

Like I can see Putin curious why Ukraine has not capitulated. But Iran just capitulating out of nowhere? Why?

  18. If the military buildup is all a bluff he’s in big trouble, a theocratic government isn’t going to simply up and leave with all their followers because of the risk of attack. I don’t know why the US ever considered this guy to be a great dealmaker, he’s been pretty terrible so far. Now it’s commit the US to what might be an unwinnable war at huge cost, or embolden the Iranian government to push hard for a nuclear weapon.

Bullies don’t know what to do when people don’t comply.

Basically every American institution should try it and see.

  20. seedyourbrain on

This is why he’s TACO Trump. He’s only got one move and flails after his initial bullying fails. God help us all if he finally decides to double down.

Now these protests, I would be willing to bet, has paid agitators.

This kind of points out the underlying problem with US policy towards since WWII:

What does the US actually want from Iran?

Remember that, in the 50s, Iran was a liberal democracy that peacefully and democratically elected their own leaders. Those leaders (acting in line with the will of those who elected them) terminated the ridiculous deal some King had signed with the British back at the start of the 20th century that gave them all of Iran’s oil forever.

In response, the US overthrew Iran’s democratic government and installed the Shah, a brutal dictator who allowed US and European corporations to plunder Iran and brutalized the people of the country for about 20 years.

It pissed people off so much that eventually they revolted in 1979, and overthrew the Shah. That is when the religious zealots ended up in power (because they were the ones who were willing to overthrow the Shah and the ones who came out on top in the post revolution power struggle).

The Shah was US backed, so the US reflexively opposed this…but once it became clear that the US couldn’t just quickly crush the revolution and reinstate the Shah, we settled into this general opposition that continues to this day.

So that prompts the question: what does the US actually seek?

Are we actually going to try to reinstate the Shah’s kid into power? Because that is an *insane* goal. It is *insane* for the US to act as an enforcer for hereditary monarchy that was deposed by popular revolt almost 50 years ago.

Are we going to let Iran pick their own leaders? Because they already did that, and the US coup’d them. So in order for that to happen, Iran doesn’t need to „capitulate“ — the US needs to back off and make verifiable guarantees that it won’t just overthrow whoever Iranians pick in favor of someone who is more willing to let US corporations have their way with Iran.

Or is Trump just going to try to straight up conquer the country, kill a bunch of people, and leave after turning the whole region into a hellscape of warlords and ever shifting territories in a state of constant violence? Because that is what it seems like Trump is doing, and in that case why would Iran „capitulate“ to that? They might as well fight to the death, because Trump just wants to kill them.

Like, if a mugger points a gun at you and says „your money or your life“, you give them your wallet and walk away alive…but if someone points a gun at you and says “ I’m going to kill you no matter what you do“, there’s no reason to give them your wallet — you might as well just start fighting for your life, because there’s nothing you can do to get that person to leave you alone.

Remember when the USA was going to govern Venezuela? Pretty sure we grabbed Maduro and then he wore twelve different outfits for photos and promptly disappeared after that.

Iran is just planning on putting up a big sign with an arrow pointing to Greenland, in the hope that next week that becomes his BIGGLIEST PROJECT…

  25. AdHopeful3801 on

Because, Witkoff, your master is a lying, inconsistent, addled piece of shit, and nobody expects him to keep any deal with Iran he makes.

Which leaves unconditional surrender, which the mullahs consider (probably correctly) to be their death sentence.

  26. OldEnoughToKnowButtr on

Yeah, but just a few bombs and there will be regime change – Just like it was predicted for Iraq…

We’ve only shown weaken since Trumps return. This country is a joke on the world stage and we’re the only ones to blame for it all

US Diplomatic Corps must have thinned quite a bit. Seems like Witkoff is the only envoy that exists these days. Luckily there are no other big tasks on his plate…

  29. Once again this is entirely about getting a nuclear deal to replace the JPOCA he tore up because obama signed it.

He doesn’t care about the protestors or the repression or regime change. ALL he wants is a piece of big beautiful piece of paper so he can say „I beat you Obama lol!“

This isn’t about liberating people or stabilizing the middle east or anything noble or notable. It’s about his obamaphobia.

    Fucking pathetic
