Waiting for the comments of people criticizing this just a couple days after criticizing his tax ultimatum, saying that he could instead make budgetary cuts. Can’t win with people. The easiest path forward would be to tax the wealthy for their fair share.

Cops don’t prevent crimes. Crimes happen and the cops are called in to take notes. The biggest crime reduction mechanism is good paying and reliable employment.

The cut to the NYPD budget takes it from $6.4 billion to $6.38 billion. The 5,000 officers who were “cut” represent an increased headcount approved by Adams as he left office at a time when the department struggles to maintain its long time 35,000 headcount. Much ado…

This budget is as preliminary as the process gets. The actual numbers will be adjusted, re-adjusted and argued for months. By law, it must be balanced. The political showmanship by Mamdani is tactically strong, especially for a neophyte. He’s made nice with Hochul, gave her campaign his endorsement and now has her on a slight defensive. It WILL be interesting to watch.

This reminds me of ALL the Blue Bloods episodes where frank (Tom Selleck) fights with the Mayor.

They’re just paying off their voters, fewer police fewer arrested criminals.

I don’t live in NYC but I know how powerful the police are and if he cuts any funding he’ll be attacked not only by current opponents by NY State.

Good luck trying to get things done in a 4 year term. The only options to close the budget gaps are to cut spending or increase taxes/fees, that’s the only two levers he has.

Adams intended to politically kneecap Mamdani and signed a bunch of additional budget and headcount for the NYPD right as he was leaving. Not surprised it got reverted back to the originally planned/agreed budget.

But this won’t pay for much. So something else will have to go too.

Mamdani has shown he is completely inept by even suggesting a 9.5% property tax hike.

Just piss all over the middle class.

  11. Police can’t recruit, so whether people like it or not, big cities will eventually have to look into non-police solutions to crime prevention.

More cops ≠ safer city (ie, the federal siege on Minneapolis that’s unfolding in my backyard)

I won’t pretend to understand the full economics of government but in my mind you can’t in good faith claim the outgoing mayor “secured funding for back in October 2025” to hire 5000 new officers and in the paragraph immediately prior to that sentence you say the new mayor “is now tasked with closing a $5.4 billion deficit over the next two years.”

How the hell is funding secured if it increases a budget deficit? Why does Mandan’s need to address it but not Adam’s?

  14. How about regulating the absolutely INSANE overtime budget. Each year of Adam’s reign they overspent by hundreds of millions of dollars. Straight up stealing from taxpayers

    5,000 fewer extra officers?

What are the bagel/donut shops going to do now? They invested heavily. They have a right to recoup their losses.

This means yet again that you can’t trust the government.

For the fifth graders: It’s /s folks
