The CPC had the option to pivot, but they doubled down. Seems to be an annoying trend in Canadian politics: doubling down on stupid things for no good reason, despite the evidence screeching at you to change course.

    2. With the Liberals broadly popular economic policy lead, which some argue is inspired by Conservative proposals, Poilieve is left struggling to differentiate himself in a way that is broadly appealing. The directions he’s poked at recently, notably affordability for young people, aren’t generally prioritized concerns across all voting cohorts. Add to this that he has to tread carefully that he doesn’t appear close to Trump on policy, if he wants to grow the party’s support, *and also* do so without upsetting the great many Conservative voters who *do support* Trump.

      >For Poilievre, the latest defection is a reminder that his [result in the Conservative Party’s leadership review](https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/conservative-poilievre-leadership-review-9.7069573) won’t be the last word on his leadership or the direction of his party. That 87 per cent may have reinforced Poilievre’s position, at least in the moment, but Conservative MPs are obviously not obligated to stand by him.

I’m not sure which CBC panelist pointed this out, but I recall hearing someone on The Current put it thus: he received 87% support from Conservative convention attendees. These are the folks that are most likely to support him, and whose political future isn’t *directly* tied to the popularity of the party.

He wants job protection from Carney so he can continue to get $300k as party leader with housing and all expenses paid while parading as the people’s champion of the affordability crisis. He doesn’t even pay for his own groceries but still is the self crowned king of lowering grocery prices and shaming whoever stands in broad daylight close to him

Getting elected to get out of the way except to belligerently oppose everything about the government people voted for
