1874 fand die erste Wahl mit geheimer Abstimmung statt. Die irische Home Rule Party (Grüne) gewann mit überwältigender Mehrheit, weil sie nur wenige Sitze hatte. Bisher konnten die Iren nicht so wählen, wie sie wollten, weil ihr Vermieter sehen konnte, wie sie abgestimmt hatten. Nordirland blieb konservativ (blau). Die Orange vertrat die Liberale Partei, die die meisten ihrer Sitze verlor. Die Home Rule Party wollte damals keine Unabhängigkeit, sondern Irland sollte sich innerhalb des britischen Empire selbst regieren, was jedoch schließlich zur Unabhängigkeit führte, als Home Rule nie gewährt werden sollte.

I’m from England my grandparents from Ireland, nowt better than winding them up with a „one Ireland under british rule“ at least once a year. They obviously know it’s a joke but these isles are the ones of taking a joke

Donegal remaining Conservative is interesting. Despite large enough numbers of Protestants on the eastern fringes of the county, it was predominantly Catholic and also one of the most impoverished spots in Ireland.
Had it ended up being included in NI, I suspect that we’d be looking at a rather different 20thC in NI than we saw.
Claiming “home rule” was never going to happen is blatantly false. There were multiple attempts by the liberal party to push through home rule legislation that were thwarted by the tories (pushed by the northern irish who didnt want home rule)
