Trump wants the American carmakers to make 100% of their cars in America, even those sold in Canada and Mexico, basically meaning Trump opposes Stellantis, Ford and GM making cars in Canada.
So our only option is to make European and Asian cars.
Better Asia than Europe. Better quality, better prices.
It’s just weird how Carney will also allow the CCP subsidized cars to also take a bite of the Canadian auto sector.
I hate that it‘s happening, but it’s the lesser of two evils. However I believe Canada should also focus manufacturing on defense in partnership with Europe to leverage the geography of the northern hemisphere. Canada’s future is to become a fortress of North America, keep the US at bay and be the alternative continental link between Europe and East Asia across the Atlantic and Pacific.
Canada produced up to 3.0M cars a year in 1999, but we are now down to about 1.3M – 1.5M, and 75% of those are built by Honda and Toyota.
It is time to move away from relying on US automotive manufacturing; it does not look like it is coming back. We should expand our horizons and look to Asian and European partners to fill the gap.
Mexico is also another problem. Their manufacturing salaries are 25% cheaper than China’s; that is how inexpensive it is to produce goods in Mexico. It will be difficult for Canada to compete with labor that cheap.
>The companies sometimes called the Detroit Three — GM, Stellantis and Ford Motor Co. — used to dominate the Canadian automotive industry. But last year, they were responsible for just 23% of the cars and light trucks made in the country, according to an Ontario research group, down from 56% a decade ago. Two Japanese giants, Honda Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp., are now the firms that matter most.
Why don’t we develop our own ?
Explain the logic.
Asia is going to buy US cars built in Canada? Why would they do that? They don’t want US cars.
Asia is going to build Asian cars in Canada for export to Asia? Why would they do that? They want those jobs.
Asia is interested in selling Asian cars, built in Asia to Canadians. That doesn’t help Canada
EV’s are going to take off as folk realize they are much better value than gas and Canada is very smart to shift away from Trump’s gas guzzling big three and embrace Asia. Plus Asia is where the money grows these days, not Yankland. Trump put paid to prosperity in that has-been shithole.
